Heads up on the late Hiram Brown penny collection auction

Recommended Posts

Looks as though dnw are doing this. Part 1 (which admittedly doesn't contain a massive amount) is on their catalogue for 13th/14th June 2018 auction. Whether succeeding parts will be added to this or subsequent auctions - well who knows at this stage?

Looks like it will be a good sale looking at some of the other pennies also listed

Dont think there has been much since the Elstree and look forward to seeing the full catalogue :)

Me too, Pete. Should hopefully be some high end rarities in there.

Subject: Query regarding forthcoming coin auction 12-14 June 2018

Hi there,

I note that as part of this auction Part 1 of the British Copper and Bronze Coins formed by the late Hiram Brown is listed. Currently, there isn't that much in there, and certainly no bronze as yet. Will part 1 be added to for this auction, or a part 2 included?

Thanks for your time.

Kind Regards,

Michael Hopkins

Hiram Brown’s collection is liable to run to several parts.

Because we already had a group of bronze coins from another vendor in the June sale, we decided to put mostly copper coins in from Hiram.

Part two of Hiram’s collection will include a lot of bronze, including a run of high-grade Victorian Pennies.

Kind regards,

Jim Brown

I'm therefore assuming that the Hiram Brown buns will not be listed until the next dnw coin auction after June.

Part 2 added to the dnw auction for 19th - 20th September. Runs to 3 pages.

Some nice pieces, one of which greatly interests me. But so far not stupendously exciting.

Maybe they will add more in due course.

Oh indeed so, Pete - plus there is one penny there which I am really keen on getting.

With that said, of course, Jerry did find that really nice F24 on e bay for a bargain basement price recently. It's just the ton of dross you have to wade through to find the very occasional diamond. Maybe that's part of the fun.

It's the overwhelming volume of crap that has made eBay a non-starter unless you are effectively unemployed. In the past 15 years the number of listings in the British section has increased 40 or 50-fold. Most people have a life.

No reason why they wouldn't. If something is in a CGS slab it gets catalogued as such, just as they would mention NGC, PCGS, ANACS or LCGS and maybe a couple more.

Hiram Brown Part 2, now runs to 4 pages.

The additions are mostly pre 1860 copper pennies and halfpennies.

It's still mainly (~70%) bronze though. They did add some bronze penny groups recently.

I think there will be a few sales which also helps with duplicates and possibly better for the seller.

If there are four of something as an example better to sell one in four sales maybe.

It also may help buyers who have a budget to spend.

Interesting to watch part 2 today. Almost all the high quality copper and bronze went at good prices to a buyer (dealer) called "Wood".

Some surprises - the 1860 E over P ( a genuine rarity) sold for £3000 less than it cost from LCA !

The F6 that they claimed to be F6A proof went for £1k.

I often wonder what WOOD means as the auctioneer today always says it .

The F14 was noticed and the F6a proof opened without a bid which makes me think others didnt think it was either ,maybe i was wrong and they even put it on the front cover.

Always another day and hope if anyone bought anything they were happy with the price or to tick one off a list 🙂

...and the one I made an absentee bid of £2000 for - the 1879 narrow date penny, lot 609 - went for £700 hammer. So that's mine.....

I made that high bid in a "who dares wins" kind of way and it's paid off. Thought I might have to pay more than that.

Literally the first one I've seen offered in that grade, with lustre, since the 2010 Workman sale.

No way is that F6 a proof in my opinion.

I was thinking / hoping it was your bid Gary when it opened as there wasnt any other bids.

Always nice to get one (especially a good one) that you have wanted a while 🙂

Hat Off.

It's Mike, Pete ;)

So how did the auctioneer play that? Did he say there was a bid of £2k?

Well done Mike. Someone I know checked out the F6A and assures me it's not proof.

Thanks gents.
