My coins

Recommended Posts

So I thought I'd start my own thread rather than hijacking other peoples.

I have some coins that were my dads, mainly a massive amount of old pennies which date from 1860-1949, I'm still sorting and weighing them out, I'm at 5kg weight so far. They are not in a bad condition, but also obviously not uncirculated either, as they have been stored in a cigar tin, and money box. Anyway, I'd just like to try and get a bit of money for them even if only scrap value to pass to my mum. So if anyone is interested in a particular year, let me know and I'll see what I've got, if anyone is localish to Yorkshire and would like to take them off my hands for a small fee, message me.

I then also have what is left of my own coin collection which I started in my student days in the early 90s, and thought it was a good time to break this up, and sell it on as well. I have some pre 1947 silver as well as pre 1920, and it's generally in a good condition, I also have some post 1947 stuff, shillings, half crowns etc that I'd like to exchange at the bank, but sadly my bank wont accept them, so they may go to cash4coins. I'm just looking at some way to make a little money for myself and my mum basically.

Anyway, I've just sorted the Threepence section and have the following years. 1875 1890 1892 1897 1898 1902 1916 1919 1920 1922 1925 1932 1933 1934 x 2 1935 1936 1937 1938 1939 1940 1941 1944.

The shillings I have are 1945 x 3 (diff designs) 1946 x 4 (diff designs)

Florins/Two shillings from 1910 1920 1921 1922 1923 1928 1929 1932 1933 1935 x2 1936 1942 x 2 1943 1944 1945 1946

Half crowns from 1946 1945 1944 1943 1940 1938 1931 1923 1921 1909 1887

And I still have the halfpennies and farthings to go through.

I just wanted somewhere to write them all down, then I can decide what to do with them.

Andy the best thing you can do is just take a picture of some of the pennies.

If you have trouble downloading the picture PM me and will give you my mail address.

Without a picture of some description people would only be looking for varieties as i assume they are low grade.

Only an option for you :)

The 1932 florin is rare - can you put up a picture of that, Andy.

Also the 1909 and 1887 halfcrowns.

Your 1944 threepence might be worth a bit in decent condition, providing it's a silver one.

Thanks.

Yes I was going to say looking for varieties is probably worth it, though are there are any decent online resources? MIchael Gouby's site has a lot of detail but it's geared more towards sales.

I would say they are middle grade, some are more worn than others, but for the age they are, I think they are in a good condition, I will get around to a photo or two, I'm away this weekend, but will give it a go and see if it works. Any particular years you'd like to see a picture of, or I'll just pick the best ones to show?

The Secret Santa sites are the best online source and cover everything you will need.

I'm slowly building a more general Collectors Reference on my website.  It isn't intended to be as detailed as the more specialised sites mentioned, but it does go to the level of Freeman and Davies.

I've done 1911-1967 so far, and will get around to E7 soon I hope, and eventually it'll go even further back.
Here's the George V shilling page, for instance.

A great resource Declan, the pictures are so much clearer than those in Davies, wish Chris would do a re-edition of Davies similar to the one done with Freemans!

Great work Declan. Would you mind if I use your stats on 1913 pennies for my penny varieties site ?

Yes of course :)

The figures are from V.R. Court's heroic survey, of which I am sure you are aware...

Having had another look through, I'm afraid my eyes and typing skills are not as good as I thought :(

There isn't a 1932 Florin, assume that was a typo on my part, and the 1944 threepence is in fact 1914, sorry.

I will endeavour to get photos of the 1909 and 1887 half crowns though.

Some other coins I have are an 1844 Half Farthing.

Fourpences from the following years 1836 1838 1846 and 1849.

Sixpences from the following years, 1816 1887 1911 and 1914. The 1816 one has a hole drilled in it at the top, like it was used as a necklace?

You're welcome. The green residue could be safely removed from the silver with a little acetone. The pennies aren't worth much in that condition although it is still worth checking for varieties. For example, if the I in BRITT of the 1911 penny points directly to a border tooth then it'd be worth somewhere around £40.
