Lima Sixpence

Recommended Posts

image.jpegJust acquired a Lima sixpence and a copy of  ESC. Checked the date on the coin and the ESC seemed to indicate 6 over 5. ESC1758

The obverse is C1 GEORGIUS with a U. This is ESC1756

I'm confused. If it is 6 over 5 does that mean the original coin was 1745 and if so shouldn't the obverse be ESC1756 and not as in the book 1758.

Any help appreciated.

I include two images of the coin.

Thank you for your attention and opinion. I'm looking at ESC page 250 and the fourth illustration on the bottom. That is where I got the 6 over 5. I don't think I can post the image due to copyright. Correct me if I'm wrong.

That doesn't look like any 6/5 I've ever seen.

This is 6/5 as you can see the vertical bar of the 5 on the right of the 6 tail which thickens at the bottom. https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=1746+lima+6d&client=firefox-b&dcr=0&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiO3p_cg5HWAhVkKMAKHRw_BYoQsAQIJQ&biw=1920&bih=948#imgrc=odmP7sa_bGGF6M:

Contrast that with image00391.jpg

Here the 6 tail is fairly uniform in thickness.

On the 1745 you have something closely resembling the image in ESC. image02773.jpg

Not for the first time the latest revision of ESC doesn't inspire. I still use the old one because it was proof read, unlike the latest incarnation.

Rob thanks again for you help and information. Looks like the ESC far from helping me is just causing confusion.
