Fake Roman coins

Recommended Posts

I know it is only a matter of time I get bitten and bought fake Roman coins on ebay. Normally you cant always tell from photos until you see it in hand.

While researching online I came across a master faker from Bulgaria by the name of Slavey Petrov. The seller of the fake coin had a very similar surname but is based in Cheshire UK. It does make me think does Mr Petrov has a UK office to sell his creation?

Your better off looking elsewhere for Roman coins. There's so many fakes or tooled AR coins on ebay its unreal.

I got stung with a couple of Bulgarian fakes a few years ago on ebay. The seller was based in London but his facebook page revealed he was Romanian which as you know is right next door to Bulgaria.

That experience put me off buying Roman coins as i had a right mare getting refunded as the seller insisted on only swapping the coins for other coins within his stock which i refused then he paid me back with an e-cheque which took 14 days to clear.

Sound advice Stu. Copies abound, so definitely worth sticking with reputable dealers.

Not my field, but there are plenty of people on here who will be happy to suggest best places to buy ancient coins.

I wish i could help you but unfortunately i can't. I only dipped my toes in the water with AR coins. Think i own around 5 all of which came from eBay before i got hit with the fakes which turned me off from collecting in that field as i realised i was out of my depth. It was easy to see they where fake in the hand but not on screen.

Silburycoins sell AR coins but they are pricey.

Maybe someone else will know of a reputable seller other than eBay. Failing that tread carefully and only buy from sellers you've bought from before with success.

I have an old friend who sells Roman coins on ebay (not my thing). He is would you believe, 90 years old. ...nearly as old as some of his coins!!!

He only purchases his coins from reputable auction houses and all his coins have a lifetime guarantee. ...though at 90 years old....

His seller name is cott2556 and i,m sure if some of the specialist in this field had a look at his site, they would vouch for his coins.

Hope this helps.

I discussd with the seller the reason why I return the fake coin. When I posted the coin a week later I sent a  reminder to the seller it is on its way and he was completely puzzled and don't seem to remember anything about it. The guy must have had so many returns he lost track of all them all.
