British Empire Exhibition Medallions/Tokens 1924-5

Recommended Posts

Hi All

I recently bought a couple of British Empire Medallions. The first was the art deco man sitting by Noble, 38mm Bronze. The second was the bust with winged hat by the Royal Mint, 26mm, Bronze.

I am totally intrigued by them. I noted there are others. Does anyone know how many differing medallions/ tokens were produced at the Exhibition altogether.

Thanks Brian

I sold 42 as a group 5 years ago. It'll require going back through some old hard drives, but I'll see what I can find.

First couple by me and probably the most common. I need to update the Royal Mint McMillin medallion for a better one but the Metcalfe one is a beauty. Much better than the image.

These have been culled from old hard drives without any semblance of order:

Although not marked as such, these were also produced for the BEE:

This is the next one I am after. They are a great example of our industrial heritage.

If you get that one just right, by which I mean untouched for decades, you might be lucky to find it has a unique purplish patina that I've not seen on any other medal. I've seen several over the years and it's just the most beautiful colour. Probably a reaction to a particular alloy.

Here is my latest B. E. Exhibition medal/token. Its the 32 mm aluminium  HMV Gramophones one. I find it  amazing that these have lasted. I have also managed to pick up a 1925 version of the Noble Industries bronze medallion.

I think spotted this last week, and was quite surprised. I lived close to the EMI pressing plant for years and knew sod all about these tokens.

I dont know if this is of interest or if you've already posted an example (i cant see all the pictures in the thread for some reason) but there's a cu-ni example for sale which i hadn't seen before. Remembered the thread and thought I'd add it https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/British-Empire-Exhibition-1924-Cu-Ni-unknown-to-me-usually-copper-27-8mm/263368362490?hash=item3d51fa49fa:g:nqAAAOSwWflaJyds

I used to think that these were very rare, but I've probably handled around 7-8 over the last four years, so maybe just scarce.

I'd say that the price is fair.

I have seen quite a few of the Cu-Ni varieties now as well. Not as common as the Bronze but still quite easy to find. Appreciate you letting me know Will.
