It is a medieval jeton with the "shield of France" design, they were used for counting/tallying. They have an AVE MARIA GRACIE legend, but these were reproduced in number by many sources so you often find some quite bizarre legends, yours does appear to resemble this legend.

Thanks Rob I do have a friend that has a niton gun so he can zap it that will tell me what metal the coin is made from up to yet most of the coins seem to be named and dated so I can stick each one in search to find out the history of it but I have a large amount of foreign coins and I came across two that look like Chinese with square holes in the middle they do look very old they may be a challenge.

thanks Steve

I think one is Shan lung series the other emperor jent sung AD 1796 - 1820 iv also found a coin that's worn smooth it has an outer ring the inner circle is like a square crest with a crown on the top the other side has a outer circle with markings I can make out the 57 on the date but that's all ? It's around the size of a old one penny

You're welcome Steve, here's the last lot you sent me. If it's so many though, it would probably be beneficial to do some reading up on each coin, you'll learn a great deal just researching them individually.

Sorry I can't help with the identification, someone will have a better idea anyway ;)

Without being a specialist on the subject, that looks like a Carlos III 1760 piece of 8, Potosí mint. The weight would help

Hi Steve,

An 8 real should be twice that weight. Either your scale is wrong, or I haven't got it right (very possible as I don't collect cobs), or you have a fake... which is very likely as these coins are very popular in the international market.

It could also be that your coin has been trimmed to death, it was common practice. Compare size below

Probably a fake but no problem  nice to add to the collection my scales will not be accurate has I only have normal kitchen ones haha I will get it checked out at local jewellery shop to find weight and the metal grade let you know

That would be the strangest piece of 8 i've ever seen, 1760 would be a pillar dollar which look like the attached. The OP coin is a much earlier Spanish coin called a cob i believe

Quite the Spanish theme going on, but the middle row middle and right is a 4 or 8 reales, can't quite make out the denomination, but it seems quite soapy to me which is an indicator of being fake, , by soapy i mean not very well struck, terminology for fakes, see the picture i uploaded of an 8 reales of 1760 and check against what you have, it just doesn't seems sharp

It did seem late to me, but I had to check and cobs were still being minted in Potosí until 1773. The Mexico mint received modern milling machinery earlier, so they were able to produce the classic pillar dollar that you have uploaded.

The number 8 in the second quadrant indicates its denomination (in pillar 8Rs it goes right hand side of the shield)

The weights also seem to fluctuate, check here the description, this cob is only 17g

Yes I see what you are saying but then again I can stick a coin against another  coin of the same year and one will be more worn than the other just makes you see that one coin had a harder life passing hands more than the other ? But I do see the difference in the two coins one for the box I'm sure.

Thanks steve

Soapy will be of a smooth appearance, this doesn't come with wear, it's difficult to give an exact detail, but maybe you can take a picture of the Real i'm speaking about and upload it separately

The Hong Kong dollar dates 1866 but shows Edward VII, so if they are matching sides of a coin it shouts fake, and gives that same fake appearance that Dave describes.

Thanks Colin just read up on the Hong Kong dollar seems that it was sold to tourists that didn't know what it was but still a nice peace to have stick it in the box it's a good job I never had to pay for the coins I should think they are all fake no worries the box is getting heavier by the day :-)
