Magna Carta £2 (not in the BU sets)

Recommended Posts

The Magna Carta £2 coins are starting to appear in circulation. Dated 2015, so rather late, but they feature the 5th portrait of the Queen. The ones in last years BU sets have the IRB 4th portrait of the Queen and seeing as they won't be making any more 2015 BU sets, all of the 2015 Magna Carta with 5th portrait will soon end up totally knackered and I predict that in the future they will be harder to find in really nice UNC or better condition - same as the 1999 standard reverse £2 is now impossible to find in nice condition (it never found its way into sets either).

Problem is, even from mint sealed bags they are already mostly in a right state before they even leave Welsh air!

I had a Magna Carta yesterday and i thought it was a BU version but it is out of a bag but in all fairness it suits my needs and seems really nice.

Yeah I got one in change today, I've noticed with all £2 coins that I've taken from circulation recently that would otherwise be BU if not for the flaw whereby they have a "halo" - a circular scratch / scuff that goes all the way around the queen's portrait.

Yes, that's a pain that is. Another problem is the edge knocks.

Up here, In the back of beyond (Cumbria) we will have to wait until all the 2016 coins have passed through every hand down south before we will see any. Strike that - I discovered a 2016 10p today! Normally we don't see new issues until November/December !!!

Lazy me has not done the research, but are the "baglets" of ten or so being sold on eBay circulation quality coins?

Yep, got a Magna Carta £2 down here in south Oxfordshire today. Still no sign of that battleship or Brittania yet.

I finally got a Magna Carta £2 in my change today.  I like the design and the coin isn't too bad, either.  Really pleased!

Still not found a £2 Magna Carta in circulation. I guess the RM never had the chance to release it to the banks in my area before they were snapped up.

The 4th portrait version is a bit of an anomaly because that might be the version originally intended for release so it ended up with the sets while it was struck in 2014 for early 2015 release, but when it came to actually releasing the coin for circulation towards the middle of 2015 that was made during that same year the 5th portrait came into use instead.

This makes the 4th portrait £2 Magna Carta a trial piece....

I don't know how many BU £2 Magna Carta set and individual collector edition with the 4th portrait were made but I would bet it is much lower than the 1,495,000 5th portrait. Might worth looking out for?
