 My first guess would be a jeton from Spanish Netherlands, Philip IV, 1651

Dunno, but I interpret it as a fern frond with a grenade at its base - (your pictures reorientated)

Can't find anything that matches MODITA though

Suggest you try posting pictures here, I've found them very helpful on early European stuff

I'd always thought that was the remains of something like COMMODITA.

Looks like you had the picture up the right way in the first photo to me

Why would the fern or what looks like oak leaves lay the way they do

Sorry, I did get it identified in the end. It's a Philip II of Naples tornese, 1599. Now residing with the person who identified it for me - bit out of my collecting sphere, that one.
