17th Century Token - Nathaniel Owen of Seve[a]venoak[e]s

I wonder if anyone can help.

I am trying to track down a particular type of 'token', made by Nathaniel Owen of Kent in the mid-17th Century (there is an example at the following link http://www.dnw.co.uk/auction-archive/catalogue-archive/lot.php?auction_id=66&lot_id=64888).

The reason for my interest is that we live in his house and thought it would be interesting to re-unite the house with a part of its past.

Would it be possible for you to give me a few pointers on how to track down such a token, or perhaps help source one for us if that is at all possible?

Hi and welcome!  What a fun quest!

Tokens aren't my area I'm afraid, but I do know that a few dealers specialise in them.  Might be worth contacting them and asking if they could keep an eye open for you?

None that I know have that particular token in stock at present but here are a few links:

David Stewart at ABC coins and tokens

Richard Varnham at Vale Coins

Simon Monks

Brett Hammond at TimeLines

Of course, there will be other dealers I've missed that could help that I'm not aware of.  Hopefully other members will chip in on those.

Good luck!

To live in his house is a good reason for looking for them.

I dont think that has come up on the forum before :)

Thanks for your help, I will definitely contact the dealer suggested.

If I do track it down I will let you know!

Thanks for your guidance, I managed to track down an example of the token - it has now been reunited with the house after over 300 years!56b7a19f4f0e9_NathanielOwenToken1.thumb.56b7a1a3f2db1_NathanielOwenToken2.thumb.

What an achievement  those seventeenth century tokens can be really hard to track down esp halfpennies

Quite a few tokens exist that are unique and many many have less that 30 examples existing .

I actively collect 17th century tokens - they can be challenging.  My main interests are tokens issued by women, unusual tokens like the rat catcher and tokens that have interesting designs.

Can I smell a Cu token resurgence on the Forum ? Some of Brandons (BRG) are magnificent and a few UK based members have picked up some beauties. There is something for everyone to get a connection and the history ticks boxes. A series which the Alibaba's haven't touched. I started with Bury / Suffolk tokens and now have broadened my interest. My sister's married name is Penny Hull so Penny Hull   or Half Penny Hull tokens have made nice presents. Trouble is I've bought examples for a few £ and sent them to her. Then I see a lesser example listed for £150....DAMN .....errr Sis you know those tokens I sent you....can I have them back?
