  1. Hello, Thanks for approving me. This is my first post... I have found a 2014 Shield 50p in my change which shows a remarkable amount of doubling on the reverse. Whilst googling I came across this post on the forum which shows very similar doubling on a 2013 Shield 50p. The consensus on that thread was that it was doubling, although before anyone could shed further light on which kind of doubling it was, the thread weirdly descended into talk about 10p coins. I have researched doubled dies, but I'm not sure what type of doubling this would be. It depends on whether the Royal The Mint uses a single or double squeeze press, but I can't find any information about this on their website. I know that the US Mints changed to single squeeze presses in the late 90s. I'm thinking that my coin could either be a Class IV Offset Hub Doubling or a Class IX Shifted Hub Doubling? I know this coin is likely not valuable, as other examples (2013 and 2014 Shields) have sold recently for around 3 to 4 times face. But I am interested in error coins (particularly those from the US, where errors are much more widely collected and sought-after!) and would love to know just what kind of error this is. Any help would be greatly appreciated! Many thanks

    January 2019 Strike Your Own

I'm off to the RM tomorrow to bag me a couple of SYO 50p's. To start the year off, they will be the old "New Pence" reverse. I'll also see what's new on the shelves while I'm there, and will probably spend a few more minutes drooling over the Victoria proof set in the big pink heart shaped case.

    Mint error tom kitten

I recently bought a new 2017 Tom Kitten 50p however upon inspection it appears to be a mint error. It appears that on the front with Tom Kitten the queen is appearing through from the back (her nose appears on the left of toms face and her crown above toms head) and on the back with the queen you can see toms ears above her head. I have heard it could be ghosting or clashed die? Could anybody give me any advice on this? Apologies for pictures was hard to show up in natural light. The coin itself is brilliant uncirculated encapsulated as shown in the pictures
  4. hi all, just a query about the fact that on eBay the prices for Kew garden 50p's seems to have increased massively. They were going for £40-£50 and are now going for up to £90! did something cause this? will the value continue to go up? in which case is now the time to buy one?

    Kew gardens 50p Urban legend

I was on a short break in the lake district and happened to listen while a guy showing us how to work the new payment machine for the trip across windamere( by car) explained to a load of tourists that there was a 50p coin in circulation with kew gardens on the front worth £50 with only a few thousand put into circulation . I did put my ore in and explained that I had found at least ten over the years , he looked at me a bit strange like I never knew anything about the subject so I decided to keep quiet . This coin along with the undated 20p now seems to have entered a magic land of urban legends where anyone in the country can list a number of facts available that are totally not true . Thanks to the mail etc LOL
  6. Looks like they are finally getting on with the circulation issue of the Hastings 1066 50p coin: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-sussex-37610910

    Beatrix Potter 50ps

If anyone finds any of the Beatrix Potter 50p designs in their change and aren't bothered about keeping hold of them, please let me know. Will take them off your hands. Thanks

    2015 Battle of Britain 50p

If anyone has found a few in change and has one spare, let me know I need to add one to my collection (the currency piece that is)
  9. I'm new to coin collecting and i am still learning things here and there. I recently bought a proof 50p 'new pence'. When it arrived the coin was twice as thick as a standard 50p. Is the standard 'new pence' 50p twice as thick or have I bought a piedfort coin without realising? Or are all proof coins twice the thickness? Any information will be greatly appreciated.
