    TOY COINS

You will, I hope, indulge my interest in these tiny miniatures. I hope they will be interesting to collectors many are new and not included in Rogers. I find them fascinating because of the whimsical nature of them and the role they would have played with children throughout the last 2 centuries. I am particularly interested in Lauer coins and would be grateful to have any exchange of ideas or research on the manufacturing history and distribution. Luckily I have the microscope and will will take images and would like discussion and debate about them from any collectors. I know they are not currency pre decimal coins but they are of interest I hope, as much as for any other reason than they are beautiful little replicas. It is also a chance for me to sort and re-examine them in between paintings just to clear my mind. Many thanks

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

thank you for helping him out The issue seemed to be that the Grading company had limited capacity to work out a tooth from a bead . But once the gospel is set in plastic iti s hard to speak other than their written word... the worst one I had was a beautiful 1837 penny which was slabbed in fact a half penny..... you just can't get the staff.... Merry Christmas all

    more FAKES

Ebay seem to be getting a little lost with their reporting . I saw a seller the other day selling an 1882 penny no H and an 1850 shilling. All shilling fakes from china have a flaw on the right ride of the acorn wreath half way up ..the copies are quite good and when you get them they obviously are not silver... however I had a message saying that the report had been checked by an AI investigative tool and found "not be in violation of the listing policy " rather silly really because if they could grasp that these flaws exist they could learn by experiences when something looks like a fake it usually is one ...the audacity !!!!LOL that the machine new better than MEMEME !!!!!LOL Merry Christmas everyone

Could someone please point me to images of 1860 2C I am getting a little confused by Freeman the images are not good. Oh for a good book on half pennies !!!
  18. I have listed a number of "interesting mint errors " early 1860 pennies on ebay which may interest some of you. brockages and off centred strikes and some error coins along with a lot of others . I think it is time to stop buying and start selling collecting served its purpose and I need some new windows and the projects in South Africa need some income . It will take about 20 years to get rid of everything . larryg1508 if anyone is looking for things please ask and if I have it i'll list it.

    1879 Penny shuttle variety

I could not find the previous discussion on the 79 shuttle type so I thought it best to start again. I managed to find another recently and this one is much better grade that the previous one . I know Jerry has another that he purchased at auction 152 item # 2434 and I listed another recently on a thread but on a search I could not find it again. It is clear on this specimen that the large lump of raised metal above the lighthouse is made up of four distinct units the base which takes on the appearance of the lighthouse used in later dates H rev I think it is (not that I am saying this is why it is I just mention it as the shape is similar) a blunt ended cone. The second layer seems to be similar in shape and form but offset to the left . A higher lump on the left base and lastly the highest section mid right. Interestingly it appears that the area below seems to be bordered by a fine raised line leading down to the top of the extant lighthouse. It may be that there is a depression. well it is an interesting variety (i think so in any case) the other one I have is the exact same outline but is less detailed (worn)

    1879 Penny shuttle variety

I think when a die breaks and there is flow into the broken section I would not list the examples of cud I felt that the shuttle was more interesting because it has no attachment to any part of the legend or design . It stands alone in the field like these "cannonballs" on the 1875 which is not a dot and is quite irregular in shape. I am intrigued by there being an explanation for the dots that Richard mentions. in the 1879 there is a second "blob" above the shuttle on many examples that is perhaps more of a dot which presumably is also the result of a foreign body damaging the die.

    1879 Penny shuttle variety

    1879 Penny shuttle variety

Hi Larry, Thank you for the images of your “deposit” just above the lighthouse on you 1879 pennies. As you say it is amazing that no one has come forward with this ‘anomaly’ before now. It certainly seems to be a constant as you have 6 examples of this variety. I presume that it is on the commoner (M + k) variety. If so it could probably be recorded as BP 1879 Bh – (M + k) – With possible small piece of grit, metal filing, etc. got trapped on the reverse striking die leaving a small indent when it fell out that got transferred on the blank (coin) being struck and subsequent 1879 coins being struck. So far, it appears that about 7 examples are known in various grades from Poor to VF.

    1879 Penny shuttle variety

Perhaps you might want to add it to your rare dot "varieties" I certainly think (although I am biased please note) it should be added
  24. DrLarry

    1879 Penny shuttle variety

I have presented the specimens of this penny to M Goulby and he agrees that it should be considered as an interesting example of another "dot type" I think there may be about 7 examples now.
  25. it might be easier to set it free from its plastic tomb and take a picture , the poor thing just might be suffering from plastic entombment syndrome . Most of us set our canaries free , but I suppose when there is a question of its "label" you could always sell it to an American who will accept with reverence anything written on a label.
