Elizabeth 1 would be another period of interest as I currently own a shilling from her reign albeit a holed one.

Thanks Tom, For me the whole Civil War era and the socio-political upheaval that went along with that tumultuous time leans me very much towards coins of that period! Although I must confess that I know hardly anything about the coins from that time. But! I am willing to learn! Can you recommend a good book/article/website to get me started for coins of that particular era please?

Strategy & etiquette for purchasing coins

I would seriously love town one of those Rob! And gold right? My biggest fear about purchasing any item of high cost and grade that isn't gold is storage and preservation y'know? At least with a historically interesting coin made from gold I wouldn't have to worry about things like verdigris developing and things like that y'know? So what would be the most cost effective way of purchasing an item like that then?

Yes! I really would Tom!! And that's where my heart is at y'know? I really love the really old coins! How many thousands did that one cost then?

Thanks Rob. What about older more collectable Sovereigns and not just gold bullion? Is that a different story?

Thanks Peter & Tom for your great insight! Back after a long tiring day job Hmmm...I was seriously thinking about investing £10K into Gold sovereigns, but now I'm not so sure? The price of gold has come down from when it peaked, but it's still not at bargain purchase level...Also, most sovereigns I see advertised by dealers seem to be well over the 'book' price! I can't see how anyone can make any profit this way if 1. You're buying over the odds and 2. You only get offered 60% when you sell?? I'm confused...
  7. Ok...I've swotted up on the book and ready for another go at my grading exam Here is my fave GB coin - GV 1915 Halfcrown which has gone almost black with an amazing rainbow like patina. Rev...NEF Am i close?...

That's true Peter, and I have about 25 similar grade GV HC's in the collection so at least a reasonable weight in sterling silver. But y'know... I would trade all 25 for a couple of HC's in high grade!

Thanks Rob. I must admit just the sheer sorting and researching of this huge world collection is very satisfying y'know? There is something very exciting and satisfying about the potential of 'finding' a rarity amongst the hoard.

Awesome insight Declan! Thank you for sharing! I have always wondered how dealers actually make a profit, and now I get the idea. I think having loyal customers is an essential pre-requisite for a successful business model and therefore being fair on price must surely be essential.

Sounds like my collection. My Grandfather was stationed in Sweden during the war and 'collected' as many Ore coins as he could. But then...the collection just grew and grew! lol. I need to sell most of my collection because I am running out of space and would rather own a small collection of high grade coins than a suitcase full of worn coins.

Thanks for your input scott. So do you think selling bulk on Ebay might be a good idea for selling off my huge collection?

Strategy & etiquette for purchasing coins

Thanks Chris. I will spend the next couple of months sorting out the huge collection of largely fair to fine coins and hopefully sell the majority on Ebay. With the proceeds I may well ask for your further help in acquiring a few choice coins for me Chris ok?

So how many coins you talking about Charlie? And what will you do with them in the future?...

Thanks ss and in fact I have just this minute read that section! From the description and the photos of the halfcrown in the book, led me to my initial estimate but I am happy if the consensus is NVF. As long as it's not another junk coin!

I totally agree! I have realised that there are collectors and there are hoarders! I want to aspire to the former in the future...

Thanks Charlie. I agree with you as the reverse is a whole grade or more better than the obv which lets it down sadly. I expect most dealers and experienced collectors experience my situation all the time right? A newbie like myself comes along thinking they have a nice collection, only to realise that virtually every coin is low grade. Thanks for the encouragement my friend. I won't get too down...my plan is to set aside the silver coins from the collection and check the remaining for any rarities and then bulk sell on Ebay. Hopefully with a few 99ps in my pocket I will then start afresh and find a reputable dealer to work with and build up a proper collection.

Great advice Tom thank you! And that was quite a risk you took there my man! But it sounds like it's going to pay off handsomely for you! Oh...and thanks for getting us back on track because I would like to know what other members think... How about Sovereigns for investment purposes? Do they appreciate over the years?

Thanks Paulus, You are correct about the photos! The mylar has reflected badly so doesn't make true grading very easy i admit. GF is ok I guess Oh man....and that's the best halfcrown in the collection....it's bullion time people

Thanks Non, I am beginning to realise that my entire collection is likely to be low grade If you guys & gals don't mind, can I post up the very best of my collection that I think are good grades so you can check with me? I have the book but always good to check with you all.

Is it just the single 1929 10 ore? I already have one you see, but wouldn't mind a look. If you have time can you post a quick pic? They have silver 0.400 content but quite common so at most we are talking 50p in VF
