Threepences eh Benio? I like it There are some nice designs to collect and depending upon how far back you're thinking some lovely silver content too Remember, anything pre-1920 is worth collecting because in 1920 the Mint reduced the Silver fineness from 925 parts pure per 1,000 to only 500 parts pure per 1,000.
  2. Morning everyone, So last night I was dwelling upon the various strategies collectors employ in order to purchase their coins, and I thought I would ask you all the whys & wherefores of coin buying strategy and protocol. In other words - How do you buy your coins? I looked at the choice GV Shilling advertised here and was very impressed with the quality, but the asking price was higher than many other similar coins I have seen for sale on other coin sites and shops. My first question is then, if you were interested in acquiring the Shilling is it good investment strategy to pay a little over the odds for a choice coin? Is it likely to return a profit in the long term (say 20 years) ?? Finally, is it acceptable to haggle with coin dealers over asking price? Hope this doesn't touch any nerves at all, I'm just trying to understand the coin dealing business a little better in terms of the best cost effective strategy for building up a first class coin collection for the future.

You come across as a pretty seasoned expert in the numismatic field Rob! Can I ask, are you a dealer or collector? And if a collector what do you specialise in?

Are you interested in collecting Arabic then Jon? This is probably the best of my collection in terms of silver Arabic...

Strategy & etiquette for purchasing coins

Thanks again Tom (Are you actually called Tom?) This discussion thread has given me plenty to think about, and I have to admit that I am gravitating towards investing/collecting a few Gold coins from the Charles 1 period but I must do my research first. As mentioned before, I'm happy to pay a reasonable price for a coin of this era, but I don't want to get ripped off or pay way too much because of my naivety. As a few of you guys have previously suggested, I will probably ask your opinions first before I take a plunge. But I will say this... If any member/dealers on this forum would like to offer me an opportunity with a price I can't refuse to get me started I will be listening...

No problem Jon. Most of the Arabic coins are silver so I know there is bullion value as a minimum!

Yeah, sorry Rob. I don't really mean a rare coin. Forgive a newbie my man! As I said right at the beginning of this very interesting thread, I am seeking further knowledge about how the whole dealer business works. I am learning loads already!

Strategy & etiquette for purchasing coins

Agreed. I was thinking more of a long term arrangement, but let's say you purchase a rare coin from a dealer and 6 months later another customer contacts said dealer and asks for a similar coin...would the dealer contact me and offer the chance to sell at a profit?

Strategy & etiquette for purchasing coins

So...how realistic is this scenario... You make contact with a reputable dealer and is it possible to work with that dealer to help source certain coins to an agreed budget, but then ask the same dealer to help sell them again if another customers wants the coins you have bought. Does that make sense? Does that kind of business dealer/customer relationship exist? The dealer helps the customer source rare coins and then helps sell them again for commission, and the customer makes a small profit as well.
