  1. It's better than a proof. It's the previously-undescribed-staggeringly-rare broken tail variety.
  2. Hmmm, that certainly rings a few alarm bells. I have to accept anyway that the likelihood is small. I just want it to be true.
  3. Thanks. I would agree that proof should be sought. I know what you mean about the year too - a lot of the silver seems in particularly good shape. I always put that down to people putting the coins aside as it was the golden jubilee year. What if I were to have it slabbed? If I sent it to CGS as a proof, would they tell me if it wasn't? By the same token, if I sent it as a normal strike, would they tell me if it was a proof? The more I look at it, the more I'm convinced.
  4. Further pictures: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxBRenK8v0n-T0dhdTdzNWFoZ2c&usp=sharing The first four (sorry, I didn't turn the obverse on its side, and I don't know how to rotate it in Google Drive) were taken outside, and the camera decided it needed the flash. The last two were taken inside by the window with the flash turned off. I'm hopeless at photography but pleased with the above two.
  5. I've just bought my first. 1887, Roman I. May I have, please, your opinions on grade? Secondly, how can I determine if this is a proof? It wasn't sold as such, but there's something about it that makes me think it might be. The fields have a mirror-like quality that I can't convey in a photo, and I don't think it's due to cleaning. It's quite dark toned, which again is not really apparent from the photos.

    1860 farthing - obverse 2 or 3?

You'd have to ask Colin. I only know the hollow neck - not immediately obvious from photos but instantly recognisable coin in hand. Colin doesn't list any other indicators on his site. http://www.aboutfarthings.co.uk/Farthing%20-%201911.html

    1860 farthing - obverse 2 or 3?

Hi all, I'm trying to work out which obverse this farthing has, 2 or 3: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxBRenK8v0n-dHJMWktMMk1tbmc/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxBRenK8v0n-NmtSczMwbVNjeVk/view?usp=sharing https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxBRenK8v0n-dzRxUzNlUnNta0k/view?usp=sharing Referring to Freeman's bronze coinage isn't quite as easy as I'd hoped. I'm sure I'll be ok once I've got my eye in and I know what I'm looking for, but at the moment I'm struggling a bit. Especially with specimens that aren't in the highest grade. Hopefully the photos will give enough detail for someone to be certain. I think I know which it is but would like verification please. Cheers, MBE

    Wreath crown advice please

Evenin' morning all. I want a wreath crown. No, I need a wreath crown. Even if it's the only one I ever get, I need an example. So, I was looking at the 1927, as they have the highest mintage and were proofs so I should be able to get a decent one. I've seen this one on ebay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1927-WREATH-CROWN-GEORGE-V-BRITISH-SILVER-PROOF-COIN-SUPERB-/262204017546?hash=item3d0c93cb8a:g:tvcAAOSw5IJWeWcO which seems ok but as it's a few quid I thought I'd seek advice here first. Firstly, is the price reasonable? I don't have an up to date price guide at the moment. Secondly, does it look ok? There's a bit of a ding on the rim of the crown plus a couple of small marks on the obverse but apart from that seems reasonable. What do you think? Cheers, MBE

    Wreath crown advice please

No, I wasn't thinking of buying that one, but I would like to know how to spot a fake.

    Wreath crown advice please

I'm not really sure Pete, might be just his lighting. Texture maybe seems a bit granular?

    Wreath crown advice please

Can I ask what you think of this one: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GEORGE-V-1930-WREATH-CROWN-VERY-RARE-/191815572478? I can't put my finger on it, but it just doesn't seem quite right.
  13. I see. I've got the other sort.
  14. Help me out here, what am I looking for on that 1909? I've probably got a few laying about.

Busy day for the Royal Mint

    It's a 50p. I'd pay 50p for it.
  20. Lower grade for me too. Because then I would be thinking, "I've only seen one in a higher grade than this, but it had xxxx wrong with it".

    Chinese coin?

    Fiver, tops.

    Chinese coin?

This site seems very good: http://www.calgarycoin.com/reference/china/china8.htm#hsien

    Chinese coin?

I'm intrigued, bagerap. What makes you say the "coin" linked to is a lucky amulet? (Oh, I've just noticed that it's enormous - strange that I can zoom in on the "coin", but not the COA.) I only ask because I've been researching a couple of cash pieces of my own. George yours appears, to me, to be a cast brass 50 cash from Hsien Feng reign 1851-1861, Board of Revenue mint.

    How do I grade this?

Yup, all just a bit sharper, isn't it?
  25. Angolan 40 reis, 1757. Larger images here: https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0BxBRenK8v0n-d291UUdKdU5zRHc&usp=sharing How do I go about grading something when I have no idea what it would have looked like when minted? I have no way of judging the level of wear. All I know is that I can find very few similar examples on t'interweb, and none as good as this one. ø40mm, if that helps? Any assistance gratefully received! Cheers, MBE
