  1. I don't really have a preference. Whichever one it's served in is fine as long as I'm not getting beer in a brandy glass. Or brandy in a beer glass for that matter. I used to have a fair degree of competence at a yard of ale, although I think I'd struggle these days.

    Gadoury auction 16th April

The starting bid of €40 for lot 212, Guernsey 1874 8 doubles, seems a tad optimistic.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I can't get my head round people spending £300+ based on picture of just one side.

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

I used to feel sorry for them but not any more. So many of them are in the TSFE (Too Stupid For Ebay) box.

    BBC articles

I guess they could infer that he was going equipped for theft as he had no intention of properly reporting his finds. Not sure that goes as far as proof of an offence though.

    Steep slabbing premiums

Sells some good stuff does Mason. I always have a second look at anything with a bubble wrap background.

New to collecting - my story so far

Yes, exactly that. There's no such thing as "EF for age", for example.

Can either of you tell me what eliminates obverse 2 please?

Actually, I can completely believe that. They do like to tell you what it is and how much you should ask when you list something. I wasn't rude, I just said I couldn't bid if they weren't sure.

It looks "very similar". I know this because I asked. "Hi we have looked at others and with it being so old and in the family we have not had it confirmed as a 1860 Pattern Penny Freeman8B it is so worn However it looks very similar to what we have seen Many Thanks"

Brilliant thank you. It appears to match very closely with this one, with the exception of the vertical line. Perhaps an earlier die state? Do you consider these to be F274 variants or F274A variants?

I think there are only 2 leaves in the third group.

    Mr. Grumpy.

It's embarrassing. Our coins used to be good.

Thanks. It doesn't look quite right compared to the example on Richard's site but obviously it's a lot more worn. The other 4 1861s turned out to be all 7+G, F282 as far as I can tell so nothing exciting there. I didn't have one so the best will fill a gap, and I wanted one to send to the chap who sent me the F269 so he has one of the same date. For a quid each I'm not too distressed.

I thought I might have been lucky and bagged a 6/8 (F274A) but although it's the right die pairing it doesn't match other examples I've found. Dracott lists a 6/6 (but no 6/8) but I think if this was a match he'd have mentioned the 8 too. Can I ask what others think please?

    Halfpenny ID check

This was the best of the 1861s, perhaps the only one that will ultimately be identifiable. I think this is obverse 5 with the die flaw on the forehead? If so it's the first obverse 5 I've had in hand so nice to see what the flaw looks like. Reverse E so F274?

    Halfpenny ID check

I bought half a dozen 1860/61 halfpennies to alleviate lockdown boredom. I couldn't see much detail, only that the 1860 was toothed. 2+B, F261?

  23. DNW estimates for lots with a few pennies in seem to be in the "let's get your hopes up" range.
