if I may put forward another possible cause. If a die is in use and happens to sustain a knock on the top of the die or if die clash is sustained its logical that an engineer would rub the face of the die with something abrasive to try to remove the mark , and a dent on the face would appear in reverse on the coin as a protruding dot or lump . in the course of rubbing down the face the outer edges of the die would have slightly more metal rubbed away than in the central area . Now the waves and rocks are only shallowly incused into the die and if the edge of that die were rubbed away then the shallow waves closest to the edge of the coin would disappear completely . the teeth or beads though are cut deeply into the die and would still show strongly on the coin. Below is a picture of the same coin as Pete's I believe .

It also has an R over R in BRITT Martin , more clearly seen on the Wybrit coin above.

Wow fancy having one of them in the garden, it would sure get some attention.

Below is a worn F28 . Note the outer ribbon at its top has a fold running down along it , and the ribbon itself pinches in at the top towards the knot . only the 5 and the 6 have this and it looks to be the same on your second picture down. Its not a 6 because the top of Victoria's head would be closer to the teeth . So yes I think its an F28.

Can you give a close up of the ribbons to be sure.

I must confess I didn't won't to show my ignorance but , JB ???

I would have said the penny is a 9+j F97A. Victoria on the obverse 9 appears to be looking forward , whereas on the 8 she seems to be looking downwards . The 9 also has the R in REG pointing slightly to the right of the tooth , and as we know that can be difficult to see clearly on some pictures in this case the R does seem to favour just to the right of the tooth.

It looks like a Ankh the Egyptian key of life .

Hi Zo . Funnily enough as you may know I bought a 1922 dot on trident penny recently , and was having a really good close up look at the dot with the magnifying glass, only to discover a minute crack running from the teeth down along the right side of the centre prong of the trident . The crack is hard to see as it blends in with the scratching damage on the face of the die . This dot is of course circular and not elongated at all. I had a count up of all the dot pennies and found that six are elongated , and show a crack running off or extremely close to the dot/comma. I've just three with almost perfectly circular dots two of which have a tiny crack running off the dot . The only one I have with no sign of a crack at all is the 1897 dot , but Freeman states that an example was found showing a tiny crack nearby . I don't have an 1870 dot or the cannon ball 1875 which look to be circular in shape. My thoughts on the drilling of a hole at the end of a crack in order to stop it spreading would only work on a flat sheet , in this case the die is a deep block of metal , and a crack would run extremely deep down into that block , perhaps as deep as an inch [2.5 cm] or more, and it would seem to me that drilling down to that depth with a drill bit of 1mm or less would be near impossible . Any shallow drilled hole would be ineffective as the crack would continue to spread deep within the die Picture Terry
