    PENNY ID CHECK

I think I recall Bernie saying that the F27 always has the dropped second 1 . So difficult to be sure . The two in the middle are F5 on the left F6 right and maybe its me but your two look more like the F6 on the right.? Used your great Pics. Richard

    PENNY ID CHECK

I wonder what aspect of the Obverses make you think that they are F 5s , as example one to me looks more like a 6 . All the 5s I have seen have a distinct gap between the back of Victoria's head and the bottom of the left corner of the B in BRITT, where as on the 6s it almost touches the head. Also both the 5 and 6 have the pinch in top of the ribbon so nothing there to determine the type. I do think that all three are reverse Fs as the plume is very wide as happens to worn Fs, and the square rock below the shield is faintly visible , and a slight depression to the left of the square rock seems to show. The example 2 has more chance of being a 5 as the teeth and rim when worn look narrower than on the 6, but the B in BRITT looks to close to the head to be a 5. ? But then who knows , who could be really certain !!!

It was way back in Oct 2014 that I discovered the new 2*, so that's nearly eight years ago now. There must have been many test types made, but after test runs found them to be unserviceable for the long production lines needed were then destroyed with no examples surviving through to the present day . But I guess we'll all will keep looking , as you never know what's going to turn up !!

My coin has no die crack , and with the die crack on all the sturdy 5s but not on the slim 5s it strongly suggests two different fonts !!

The whole of the 5 seems to be flimsy and very pronounced along the bottom bar, where as on the other type it is so much more solid and robust . Could be called a slim 5 PS My example has the slim 5 as well.

I guess you hadn't noticed Richard , look at the inside of the 5, it looks just like the 3 in my 1903 with the same straight line and at almost the exact same angle of alinement not perpendicular . Are these different fonts ?
  7. New variety ? I have looked at this under close magnification and can see no sign of tampering or damage , but there is a dent on the edge of the opposite side , but it is away from the position of the 3 due to slight die rotation on the coin . Normal 1903 type below

1903 Penny with squared off bottom loop inside the 3

Well, I'm not sure its caused by die wear , but if it is, there should be other examples out there to be found. !!
  9. The fake copper pennies all have perfectly proportioned and regularly spaced teeth which are all made on modern computerized machinery , where as on the genuine coins an adjustment was made to the tooth spacing under the third digit in the date by having a wider tooth .

This is the narrowest Date type that i have come across, not listed by Gouby and even Rarer.

    Penny -1874-H Reverse I

The Picture is from my Library , mine is not that good !! , but yes an F69
  15. That really has been rotated quite a lot. I found one some years back on an 1861 6+G with the G in REG totally out of position , being low and to the left with the old G showing around it. Though its probably a G over G It could be over a C, but the coins to worn to be sure , and I've not seen another as yet to compare it with .

It doesn't , It just depends on whether you find date width variations interesting and wish to collect them on not. Many of them are ex rare but not many collectors are interested in them. They a more common in early coins as would be expected and seem to have disappeared completely by the 1940s . On the whole there inexpensive and new undiscovered types are still turning up. Its the thrill of the chase for me ??

Is this what you mean . And yes Depeche Mode . Seriously one difference which Pete picked up on is that on the common type the 1 almost touches the tooth on the rare ones there is a gap between the 1 and the tooth

I compared it with the common type Gouby Ab and the last 1 to the gap type Gouby Aa and i cant see any noticeable difference between any of them , but as both Aa and Ac types are so rare i would think that each were minted from just one die ,which would suggest that reserve dies were kept with just the first three digits stamp on to them and that they were later needed and had the last digit i.e the 1 inserted so as to complete the number of coins required . I guess this could mean that they were very slightly different.
