    10kg Gold Coin

Love it and love the design. Not in the same league but I will be buying the 1 oz gold bullion version at some point over the next few months. There are some nice silver and platinum versions too, both in proof and bullion.

I' m a similar age to her. One of my friends knew her - one of his best friends was good friends with her husband - and said she was charming company in private and knew how to enjoy herself. Sad news indeed.

    Calling all rock fans!

If it's not too late - count me in please. Love rock music - my first ever gig was Iron Maiden back in 1984 😎 I'm about 75 minutes' drive away from Bletchley. Faster if I listen to rock music!

New to collecting - my story so far

Hello Jack and welcome. Nice choice regarding collecting shillings. They were my favourite denomination when I had a schoolboy-style collection about 40 years ago, and the first place I resumed when I rekindled my interest back in 2014. I too have a type set of shillings, of variable grade and quality, going back to Charles II. I don't have one of absolutely every type (you will need patience and deep pockets if, for example, you want to have things like the Welsh Copper Company shillings of the 1720s) but I have at least one circulating shilling of each monarch, and usually each different bust of each monarch (certainly since George II). This type set contains 40 coins in total and stretches from 1676 to 1959 (Scottish). Some of these coins are GEF or better but most of them are significantly lower grade - they range from NF (a 1905 shilling) upwards but I would buy almost all of them again and have no strong desire to upgrade them. Since rekindling my interest I have bought a little bit of everything, from the quarter farthing to the crown. Half crowns and florins are probably my favourite denominations but my first love was the shilling. These days I'm not buying predecimal, my coin collecting bug has taken me in a different direction - but I still get the predecimal collection out from time to time, admire them, remember where they came from, and enjoy being their custodian. Enjoy your journey!

I bought one of those 2019 sets (to keep, because I didn't have a 2009 Kew) - so that's good news for me at least, Pete 🙂

    Mr. Grumpy.

Yep. It's still cringeworthy though. The continuing infantilisation of something that has no business being infantilised. Bah humbug!
  7. Do you take the article to mean that the Royal Mint has produced lots of new £2 coins over the past few years, but which haven't been released into circulation? That's how I'm reading it. Otherwise, how would they know that there is a stockpile of 26 times the target? If so - just allow collectors to buy them for £2, especially if they are post 2016 designs please 🙂

Gonad lubrication 😉 Nice! Looks a bit down at heel...

    Did you buy it @VickySilver?

I'd be delighted to own either Paddy or ozjohn's 1910 half crowns 😄
  11. Nice. I distinctly remember looking at my watch nearly 18 years ago at 20:02 on the 20th February 2002. That was a triple palindrome in UK date format!
  12. Interesting perspective @JLS. I've actually taken almost the opposite approach - in that I've changed my main coin collecting focus towards new UK precious metal bullion coins, and away from predecimal numismatic coins. My reasoning being that I'm not going to lose my shirt on these coins (assuming the intrinsic metal value doesn't fall through the floor) if I need to turn them back into hard cash at short notice, and I can buy them at a relatively small premium compared to their intrinsic resale value. I also think that many of these bullion coins are beautiful in their own right. Currently I'm not looking to buy any older sovereigns although I would love to own some of the 19th Century Double or Quintuple sovereigns. I did still buy a good few predecimal coins last year, but this year they will much lower down the priority list. I need to save up to buy 6 more gold bullion coins this year first!
  13. Still, a million quid buys a lot of other vices 😉

I applaud your enthusiasm and diligence, but to paraphrase one or two others on here - all I'm seeing is either 'rang tang' or 'a thrower' 😋

I'm struggling to join the dots. Can anyone give me a synopsis of this ellipsis hypothesis... ?
  16. It's actually the original spelling of bride-to-be 😉
  17. ^^^ That will leave everyone snookered for the maximum amount of time. Back on the bird theme - most weekday lunchtimes I walk round a park local to my office. There are a couple of jays in there too, which I enjoy looking out for.
  18. Oh gosh, not Yew again. Don't talk to me in such clipped tones, or we'll have to set some boundaries between us.
  19. Good grief. You all need to get back in your Box.

Richard - I put a thread on the forum when i went there nearly three years ago now - how time flies! Sadly, the photos don't show properly now because of Photobucket but hopefully you'll get an idea of what sort of stuff is there. Some true rarities... The strike your own coin is whatever they offer at the time - you have no choice. When I was there in Feb 2017 it was the yet-to-be released new £1 coin, but sometimes it can be a coin not intended for circulation. The coin is struck twice, so it's a better strike than a normal circulating coin.

Latest 50p from the Royal Mint

Dear me. What is this place coming to...
  23. I think you had a lucky escape, personally. I don't see value in this coin being anywhere near the premium being charged over bullion... The London Coin Company will have been given an allocation of the coins from the Royal Mint. Other dealers often do too, such as Chards - and Chards usually prices the coins below the official RM price if you're lucky/organised/quick enough to get one of their allocation at the time of release. The remainder will have been made available to buy on the RM website.
  24. I like your coin, ozjohn, and think I would probably call it GVF or maybe NEF as it appears to have less wear than Non's coin, which I have also previously expressed admiration for. I agree it has pretty good eye appeal. My own example, which I don't think is quite as good as yours, although the strike on the obverse is similar and the reverse is pretty decent too:
