    Cleaning hammered coins

Many Thanks for all your comments! I feel I must do something to stop what might be going on now. I think as Coinery has suggested, I will leave them in soak for a couple of weeks and do a bit of gentle picking and see how I get on. As JPK suggests, am sure there is still plenty about, down there/up there, but with a little digging no doubt! The best pitch if anyone wants to try, at least in my experience, is between London Bridge & Queenhithe dock. I should go for it! I know that people have found the odd sov, but I think one of the finds best must be a medieval kidney dagger found in mint condition in the mud. A really vicious looking weapon, The blade about 1" wide under the kidney shaped hilt and running triangular shaped about 12/15" to a fine point. The nastiest bladed weapon I've ever seen, now in The Museum of London. One can only guess why a triangular shaped blade!

    Cleaning hammered coins

What is the best method of cleaning hammered coins? I have a few small hammered coins which I found on the shore at London Bridge some years age by sight, with nose to the ground. Since the advent of sophisticated metal detectors I doubt any coins left now. At the time I did have an early metal detector but which could not discriminate from old iron. So is was impossible with so much about. Never been back! Am sure there is an expensive method to clean. But what would anyone suggest is the best at reasonable cost? I have done a search on the forum but nothing seems to come up. Thanks!

    Two Anglo Saxon coins

I have had prolonged doubt as the authenticity of these two Anglo Saxon coins, I suppose really due to their excellent state. I therefore decided to contact Dolphin Coins and ask whether they were originally purchased as 'museum reproductions'. Although, I had previously purchased a few 'museum reproduction' and in fact there is no comparison. The 'museum reproductions' look like what they are, even to my 'nubie' eyes! Am please to advise, that I have had the following response from Dolphin Coins, now at Hemel Hempstead:- quote "The coins are definitely original as we guarantee our coins for life. We would be very interested in repurchasing these coins from you." unquote I do now feel that they are two original Anglo Saxon coins! So, I am pleased! Thank you for all your past comments!

    Edward VI halfcrown

Thanks for your opinion David which I do much appreciate. I ordered yesterday a 2015 copy of Spinks and am awaiting delivery. But even with a Spinks, I am not always sure that this type of catalogue is ever in touch with the real world! Where as, I would suspect that is forum is! Very much!

    Edward VI halfcrown

This Edward VI halfcrown of 1551 was bequeathed to me some 12 years ago and valued by a friend, at the time, at £100 and graded as 'fair'. It was purchased, I believe, some time in the '90's from Dolphin Coins and as can be seen from the attachments appear to have been purchased for £275 with a grading of 'gfine' Assuming it was purchased in 1999, the current Bank of England inflation calculator gives a current value of about £430. Might I trouble you to suggest a current value and your opinion of it's grade? Many thanks!

    Two Anglo Saxon coins

Thanks for your advice Colin G, I think I might invest In a 2015 Spink Cat. At least, its always nice to look at magnificent coins I cannot afford!

    Two Anglo Saxon coins

Notwithstanding that Dolphin Coins are a reputable coin dealership, unfortunately I am still a little apprehensive of the genuineness of these two coins. e.g.:- The Canute coin: The 'quatrefoil' appears too near perfect and somewhat different compared with what I have found on the 'Coins of Britain' website and my own 1997 Seaby coin cat. And the nose on my coin is BIG! The Eadgar coin: I take on board 'damian1986' comments, amongst which, that pellet after 'A', is very perfect! All in all the condition of these two coins to my 'newbie' eyes is excellent and makes me think, where have these two coins been for the last 1000 years to be remain in this condition? The I recall that amazing Anglo Saxon gold mancus of Coenwulf in mint condition after 1000 years, so I am back to square one! Also, due to the very nature of the method of production of medieval hammered coins a great variation of type is of course to be expected. So I am still hopeful they are original. P S I am thinking of investing in a Spink 2015 coin cat. Would that be a worthwhile advantage over a 1997 Seaby?

    Two Anglo Saxon coins

Am quite amazed Rob you being able to turn up these adverts from all those years ago! Fantastic! Todays Anglo Saxon coin prices seem to have beaten the rate of inflation. According to the Bank of England website: £!49 in 1996 is now £250 and £249 now £405. Just hoping my two coins are 'OK' ! )

    Two Anglo Saxon coins

Thanks Rob! What you say is most encouraging! For interest, with the coins in their small plastic envelopes, each have small folded printed cards, 40mm square. I have attached images as to what they say. The Canute coin has in addition a card 30mm dia as attached. If the cards are not genuine, Dolphin Coins certainly went to a lot of trouble. It is good to think that Dolphin Coins are still in business and seem to be a reputable company. I thought they might have been fly-by-nighters!

    Two Anglo Saxon coins

Many thanks for your comments: Paulus - Rob - damian1986, which I much appreciate! As least I paid no money for them! And thanks to TomGoodheart who recommended 'Predicimal' to me! As a matter of interest the two coins originated from :- Dolphin Coins, 2c Englands Lane, Hampstead NW3 4TG They are no longer listed in the Coin Dealers Directory, of course! Does anyone know anything of Dolphin Coins, were they legit or were they in the business of 'replica' coins?
