Yes similar to lot 16 http://www.colincooke.com/collections/james_workman_pt1.html Quoting CC "BMC --. F--. Satin --. Similar to Gouby T but with re entered colon dots of which are smaller and much closer together, similar to those used on halfpennies. Unrecorded in any catalogues. Excessively rare, possibly unique." Since the sale has this become a recognised variety? Interesting halfpenny colon dots. Perhaps the colon dots were re-entered after all but accidentally used a halfpenny colon instead.

Calling Penny-bugs!!! Someone snapped this on ebay before I could, but can you tell me if this is what I think it is? The best way to find out would be for someone to tell me what is so peculiar about this coin. Based on your answer or answers I will know if I missed out on something mildly important. Thanks in advance to all those who tried.
  4. Hennessy and ginger ale please! Richard's question about the 1882 penny is a classic. I would go for it at the right price, though the coin is a stinker for it will definitely plug a gap in my collection. The same can be said about the crosslet 1864.
  5. I would prefer a 1933 penny in poor grade over any other penny in UNC
  6. PCGS are the most consistent. Croydon coins you might want to take their attributions with a grain of salt. ANACS seem like the most conservative of the lot. NGC is potluck, I've had coins graded 63 regraded as 65.

  10. Looks genuine but sovereigns are the coin of choice for counterfeiters. Take it to a pawn shop, if they'll take it then you know the coin is at least worth its weight in gold

You did the right thing by letting the buyer decide for himself.

There's a fine line between a hobby and an obsession. So long as it's a hobby you strive to acquire pieces at a price under the catalog prince. After that once you turn professional you don't mind catalog prices and there's a drive to acquire choice pieces. This is where the likes of Niel and Rasmussen come in. Like Pete mentions they are doing it for a living. If you need quality then be prepared to shell out top $
