    Your favourite coins

For me it has to be Charles I English late hammered, not just because this is the era which I collect but it is in the sheer volume of diversity in this series and the differing quality of some issues that interests me. From the early Tower issues through to the later Provincial issues you can literally see the civil war period unfolding before you. So my favourite by far!
  2. With all the current economic gloom all around the world at the moment coupled with a forseeable finacial downturn overall I am wondering how this might or could affect the coin market? Although I am a collector and my main interest is from a collecting point of view rather than investment I can`t help but think of the prices of coins at the moment and think should I purchase the coin I like? or wait to see where the market is going over the next year or two! So my question to all you coin folk is: What is your opinion of the coin market and what of its prospects over the next couple of years?
  3. I suppose if you ever get bored you could play with your loose change and see if you can make that puzzle. Look on the bright side, at least the coinage still has a british theme, soon the mint will put a pin in a map of the world and then make some designs in the hope of keeping the majorities happy!!!!
  4. I think that there would be more than enough info from the many experts and collectors on this forum alone, plus with the help existing older publications, to fill a new monthly issue easy and keep it interesting for many years. I`m sure many people would be more than happy to provide expert knowledge and permit the use of photos of their coins, with so many eras and differing coin issues in British history and with a well planned layout a new magazine would please and benefit many. Have adverts, they are necessary, but not too many! but most of all the bulk of the issue should be about `old collector coins` and about collectors. I do not know what the cost of such a venture would be but with a bit of thought I think it would not take much to out strip the current `dated` regular coin issue.
  5. Just seen in the shops the 2008 edition of collectors coins GB and would like to say what a great idea it is to have added the free half-penny. Although it would not appeal to me as modern coinage is not my area of collecting it did catch my attention, as I stood there looking at it on the shelf I thought what better way of trying to introduce young people into the hobby. After reading some of the other posts about how some of us started our hobby, for example finding some Vic bun head`s in grandads old tin, and in common with many collectors, I think this is more of a good idea than a gimmick. This hobby will always need new young collectors `the grass roots, if you like` to come along. So well done to the editor or whoever had the idea.
  6. Well it was in the usual section for such a book, antiques and silver etc, and found very easy because I was looking for coin reference anyway. Mind you one shop had just one copy and the other two copies, but may have already sold some!
  7. I see it in two shops, both being in Waterstones if I remember correctly. While on this subject has anyone seen the 2008 Spink catalogue as yet? If so has any of last years misprints and errors been corrected?
  8. Any luck with the Charles shillings {E5!!!} at DNW sale Rob? The shilling with `N` head mm I had my eye on went mad! along with most of the others. What is happening to the market? some people are setting very high prices with their winning bids, I sometimes question my collecting habbits!
  9. Hi Everyone, I have a Charles I Half-crown I would like to show you all and hope for some expert feedback. Whilst I am very keen on the study of the various mint marks and die pairings of Charles I Tower mint English hammered coins, I also find errors very interesting too. The reverse legend of this coin seems to show the word Christo as Chresto? to me it looks like the letter I could have been made over an E from a die error, but I am not sure. What does it look like to you?

    CHRISTO or CHRESTO ?

The REGNO theory is very interesting, thanks. Die pairings!!! I like to keep a record of the various types that I have seen over the past few years just for my own pleasure, I suppose my use of the word `study` is a bit over enthusiastic, as you say there are just too many to look for and to find the time for. I just find the number of differences in hammered coins very interesting, each coin being unique in its own little way. You are correct, `studies` are for the experts, I stand corrected as a humble interested collector!!!

    CHRISTO or CHRESTO ?

    Thanks for that Colin.
  12. I am far from being a sovereign expert but going by the Spink catalogue it very much depends on where the coin was minted and which variation in design it has. Spink suggests that if the coin has a M { for Melbourne} mint mark or S {for Sydney} mint mark AND it has a variation in the J.E.B. initial then it is rare, but other than this it is of a standard type. Its worth studying Spink or Coincraft for this info!
  13. Is this the official 2007 sovereign strike? This is not my area of collecting but I have to say it looks like a step backwards in design, to me it looks more `cartoon`, also why is George poking his tonge out to the dragon?

    1990 5p varieties?

I have noticed many times that the edge to the new 5p`s and 10p`s have differing edge rims but do they really qualify as being a `variety` or `type`. I would have thought that it was just the wear in the milling process, like you get with some brand new coins being better struck than others.

    Spink 2007

I had a another look at it again the other day while in WHSmith, and apart from the previous mentioned price mistakes, I was amazed at the amount of mistakes with the coin pictures. I only studied the Charles I section but that alone had a number of wrong pictures for references and also double printing the same coin under different reference. I think that Spink have this year put a lot of thought into the colour aspect of the book and not concentrated much on checking those mistakes. Ofter seeing it on two different occations I have decided not to purchase this year, hopfully 2008 will have all the corrections!
  16. Going by the photo I too would be suspicious of it and think it a copy. If I was a collector of this period I think that anything below EF is not collection worthy, unless of coarse it is a rarity, so I would not even bother with this one if it was on ebay.
  17. `Snap` great minds think alike, yours is exactly the same as mine Tom. I too chose the size of holes to suit my collection. `Cheers to good old fashioned coin collecting`
  18. I got back into coins aroud 5 years ago after a gap of around 10 years {not much time due to 2 small children}. Since I got back into this superb hobby I decided to store my coins the `old fashioned` way of displaying them in a purpose built mahogany coin cabinet. I used to use an album with those adhesive window envolopes that suspend the coin, which I think are very good, but now I have this cabinet which I think is by far the best way to keep coins, especially if you want your coin to have a nice tone! I am interested to know what the members of this forums favourate coin storage system is and why.
  19. When I purchased my cabinet, which is around 8" square {sorry 20cm square} I was pleasantly surprised at the variuos sizes that can be made, the smallest being about half the size of mine which can hold approx 200 coins {depending on denomination}. Enough space for a modist collection and easy to store for security purposes.
  20. It is a pleasure to see someone take the time and effort to make numismatics an educational issue and take us away from the commercial profit makers that this forum and others have been talking a lot about lately. Jeff I think your site is already of an excellent standard, I look forward to using it as a reference in the future. Keep up the good work!
  21. Has Charlie had the `op` then or have I missed something?

    Spink 2007

The big change for this year is that all the plates are in colour and of course the annual price rises. I looked at it at Spinks just before christmas and it is a lot better in colour, but must admit I did not purchase one. Oh yes, and this price has changed at £25.

    PRICES

I think the prices are basically driven by the investment market, the high grade specimens going to them which is having a knock on affect with lower grade coins going to collectors, with more collectors around the lower grade coins are also going up in value. when it will end?, I think now that the stock market has recently improved and also if the housing market slows this might in turn shy the investors, but then again I think it is foreign investment {US,China} who are to blame.

    Deal or no deal

Hi Peter, Just had a £1 win, a nice graded Charles I Oxford £1 will do just fine for me! Great fun! Thanks.
