    Ebay's Worst Offerings

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Unauthenticated-1933-george-v-bronze-type-penny-gap-filler-dirty-bent-read-all/124513709632?hash=item1cfd986e40:g:I4cAAOSwYBRf8Z6b Last time she had one (Just last year wasn't it? What are the odds??? Er, none whatsoever.), didn't it come to her in a Whitman folder of pennies she'd bought at a jumble in the same church? So that's twice she's suggested she may have their valuable penny but still happy to offer it for sale on Ebay. Oh, and I see it appears she's now out of rare Indian silver coins. Plod should knock and have a word.

    Stuff to Make Us Laugh

Apologies. I wanted to upload an image but there was a problem doing so and the empty post I can't now delete. This is a problem I've noticed here in the past. Anyway, here's the image again…..

1697 William III Sixpence RFX for REX?

    Yup. Works for me.

1697 William III Sixpence RFX for REX?

Yes Chris, what I thought too. Look at the foot of the 'F' in RFX. To the left tapered while to the right cut off short at sharp right angles. Also, the middle and upper horizontal bars match those of the E punch used elsewhere in the legends. Further, the RFX 'F' doesn't match the F in FRA. Still, nice find all the same.

    More Pennies

Now £255, with eight days still to run. People are mental.
  7. That's true Chris. By the late 1980s/early 1990s the pound coin was pretty much small value coinage yet fakes were everywhere. I remember lads would go from pub to pub selling them. They were seven for a fiver. Same weight, so worked in ciggy machines, tunnel tolls etc. (handy if travelling across the Mersey on a regular basis). Maybe those half pennies were sold in the same way in the early 19th century? Eight for threepence? Three for a penny? Though who knows which coins ciggy machines were accepting back in 1806…. How times change. Ciggy machines: do they even still exist? Are there still enough smokers to be worth the bother? It must be 30 years since I last stood in front of one. Speakers belting out some unholy din. "Macca. Macca… MACCA!!! Have you got ten pence? I…SAID. HAVE YOU GOT TEN PENCE???" Ah, happy days…...

That certainly does look to be a likely candidate. The size would probably match too.

    Elizabeth Half Groat on CCF.

I'm loving this. It's what my end of the hobby is all about. I thought the CCF post worth sharing here and, as usual, Rob kicks off with a spot on observation. The word 'unique' is so often used incorrectly but if a coin is an only known (or, to date, noticed) surviving example of a die does 'unique' apply?

Yes, I've just read that over on the other forum. A most unusual little coin.

    Ebay's BEST Offerings

Dear god, was that really worth the effort? I haven't a calendar in front of me but doesn't British Pedant Day fall in Julember? Switch it off and come down now Timmy, dinner's ready.

Or possibly thread. Interchangeable I suppose. They're certainly the best chuckle Ebay have offered me today.

  16. Looks as though CC have reduced it to £95. Graded fine. Fair would be generous. So yes, absolutely right, compared with that the Ebay coin was a steal.
  17. The link doesn't work here either. I took a look at the recent completed sales for 1845 farthings. Is this the one you mean? That's nowhere near fine. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Victoria-Farthings-1845-amp-1850-/383770017751?hash=item595a79bfd7%3Ag%3AOVAAAOSwYJpfjAFn&nma=true&si=KnCYPKtJSFQ%2BOzlOgHdn9CGd1JU%3D&orig_cvip=true&nordt=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.l2557

  19. I agree. The logical explanation is 1695, short run, first issue. Your photographic evidence nails the date.
