I know that identification of the 4/3 can be a bit tricky, especially for the novice - and is certainly difficult for the naked eye, even with the sharpest eyesight - but for an experienced company like Noonans, specialising in English coins, that mistake is inexplicable. Also, they seem to slightly resent mistakes being pointed out to them.

Yes i agree ,i would not buy that as an 1854/3 looking at the picture.

All it does is waste everyones time describing them wrong as the majority just get returned. The vendor not paid or the auctioneer left with a coin they then have to try and sell someone else.

  2. I think its more likely the Large rose he overpaid for when he bought it , it has been for sale over two years.

The same seller has recently added one on his website in fine grade for £100 and the more expensive one maybe he bought attributed and just gave it a go.

Some copper pennies sellers have found not attributed and not paid much for them ,its therefore much easier to sell them cheaply.

Dealers who buy quite a lot may just take a chance and pay a high price for something considered rare / scarce hoping to sell it and just make a bit ,it doesnt always work.

I will upload the mule tomorrow and maybe the other pennies in a quite superb collection of some 20 high grade and very nice pennies.

You will have to excuse me if I am being a little dense.

Is the rare variation Obverse M or Obverse P?

It is Gouby Obverse M and Freeman Obverse 9.

Richard who is a forum member has the really good website with pictures of the rare pennies you linked above ,maybe some of yours can be added 👍

Yes I will upload a picture of the Mule. Thanks for the reply. I did look at the website. Under a magnifying glass I counted 6 border teeth from the up right  of the R to the top of the I in Victoria which matches with Obverse P? I bow to your superior knowledge however so Obverse P isnt the rare variant then?

Maybe the confusion is looking at the Gouby reference rather than Freeman.

Freeman 103 is Freeman OBV 9 which is 5 teeth between the R and the I of Victoria.

Look forward to seeing your pictures of the rare mule ,infact any others that you are lucky enough to now own 👍

I think they have done a decent job too .It might look worse in natural light though .

No thats exactly how it looks Mick ,as i mentioned if someone wants to buy them dipped because they think they look good ,thats entirely up to them.

Just a shame maybe if they didnt know that when they come to sell them they dont get as much.

  6. This is the farthing a couple of days before it was re-sold for a lot more 👎

1849 Queen Victoria Farthing | eBay

I have no problem people buying them and selling for a profit its what makes the world go round ,however some people are buying them and altering the appearance solely to perhaps mislead people,it would not be so bad on the odd one maybe BUT there are loads of them.
