Have you tried asking her to trim down her collection of shoes, handbags and pretty things for the house? Then there would be plenty of space for your coins??

A little late here but this made me laugh coffee out my nose. Then I had to explain to everyone at work what I was doing. In Spanish. With coffee all over me.

    -_-

  2. Hi and welcome to the forum!

A strange effect on that one... If you just want to know value, it's still going to be 20p unfortunately. Maybe on eBay someone will pick it up as a curio, but I doubt anyone would pay more than a quid or so.

As to how that happened, I've actually no idea. Could be a severe die clash or a bad die, I'm interested what others think.

    Nice find.

A.R.Alexander together with A.M.Lisk had already found this variety and describe it in their April 1977 Coin Monthly article "Variants of the Modern British Penny 1895-1967" thus:-

    Minor Varieties

    1. Reverse B with the 5 of the date close to the 0 (about 1/2mm gap). Alexander. 5 in 6 (83%).

    2. Reverse B with 5 distant from o (nearly 1mm gap). Alexander. 1 in 6 (17%).

Reverse B corresponds to Freeman F160.

Dave Groom also describes this variety in his book.

    Well remembered AH.

If anything, Terry, it serves as confirmation of your own findings. @DaveG38 do you mention anything about the curved E or the size of the 0 in the date or only regarding the spacing between the numerals? Sorry no book to hand.

  4. Great eye Terry, and very well detailed. This could be part and parcel of trying to iron out the problems they had from changing the bust design, differing shapes/sizes of numerals and fonts etc. A question, as I don't have an F160 to compare, does the E in ONE also differ between these varieties?

The F160 is hard enough as it is... don't say I need to find 2 of the buggers :D

The guy - signs himself as Tony, although seller name is Shelly - obviously has major issues with written communication. In the link Jon posted just a few minutes ago, he entitles his worn and overpriced 1926 ME penny, as follows:-

    What does that even mean?

Strange, because each and every time I've spoken to her, she has reminded me of the fact she is selling her husbands coins because he has a terminal illness. A fact which she has shared with many for some reason. And she always signed off with Shelly.

Also I have no idea what that listing means :D

  6. Thanks Paul, I was looking for the coin prices though, as in some sort of comparison in the price changes CGS makes of their valuations.

For example they valued a 1901 penny - CGS 80 at 50 quid in 2015, then 60 quid in 2016. For example.

  7. Jerry more or less hit the nail on the head there.

I've bought from Shelly before when she first started listing all these pennies and alas the coins were cleaned, I got in touch and explained that they weren't advertised as such and she told me she didn't know if a coin was cleaned or not, and I returned them for a full refund, including postage. I wouldn't buy from her again, but in her defence the return was trouble free, albeit a bit intense.
