Woops, wow, complete muppet, apologies I meant William IV. I know it's not great quality at all, however I'd just like to be able to put a date to it as it's the last coin that I've not been able to identify. Cheers

In keeping with the post a few above, I don't think they can release the mintages until after the end of the calendar year. Whilst they might know in advance for the commemorative crap marketed to the masses, a regular currency piece's mintage will depend on the demand from the banks for coin. If they don't order it, the Mint doesn't produce it.Yes, i still find it odd though. We've known these mintage figures for a while so why wait until now?

I've been wondering why did the RM release this statement when they did? Are minting numbers for general circulation coins known in advance or does it depend upon the demand for coins that year and we don't know until after te year.The cynic in me thinks they're doing this to get more people to buy their special releases in the hope it'll be "the next kew 50p" or do we already know they'll strike say 4mil?

Hi demonlee, welcome aboard. I'm in a very similar situation myself having been given a load of coins by my dad at Xmas that my granddad collected. I've been doing lots of reading (this forum is immense) and had been tending towards George III period. However, I saw a comment on another thread that I had posted which suggested (or this is how I've interpreted it) that if you're new, you should just collect a variety to see where your interest lies. I quite like this idea because it means you can go for whatever you like the look of. Either way, enjoy!

Hi all, so since my last post I have now ordered and received my Spink (2011) and am excitedly waiting for the grading book through the post that was suggested by someone previously. I have now started going through some coins that my granddad collected (though not as a hobby) and most date from the 1920s-60s though there are quite a few oldies going back to the 1880s, although their quality is terrible and am trying to work out their grade for practice. As such, I wonder if people could pass comment on what they think of the attached and how far off the mark I am (though they're not great resolution piccies - ps I haven't got an external system for pics yet, so will try to post them individually, replying to this message. I really want to, but don't want to come a cropper immediately and still not sure where my interests really like. However I have been looking at prices and reading up on things and am struggling to answer the following. I noticed that on a website (R Ingram Coins) they have an EF 1797 Penny listed at £195 (no pic unfortunately). According to my Spink (albeit 2011) a 1797 EF Penny is either £325 (with 10 leaves) or £400 (11 leaves). Why the huge discrepancy? I have read that coins come and go out of fashion, but should you expect such a huge depreciation in price in just three years and do you get such trends on these kinds of coins? Thanks everyone! There's so many coins, designs and the historical links (which is most important for me) that I'm thinking....everything! haha Seriously though, I think I'm going to go with George III. I'm really interested by all the re-stamping (probably got the terminology wrong) of foreign coins, though from what I've seen the prices are unrealistic at the moment. But then I have a lot of these coins from my granddad which are turn of the 20th century and feel it would be a good start. So still not really sure.

Apologies, no I meant the half penny I copied the link for from ebay. No the pictures I added were coins from my grandad that my dad gave me at Christmas which I'm resigned to realising dad only gave me the lower value coins to pique my interest.

Not that I'm now interested but just for my knowledge, what are the particular big turn offs on this coin? And by that I mean the original coin I posted.

Yes that's correct about ordering it via predecimal and absolutely no worries whatsoever. Thanks for the info, but I'm quite old school when it comes to my books. I'm guessing if you couldn't locate one, I'm going to struggle? Are there any other books that do a similar job that you'd recommend?
