Thanks for both your insights. It's not that I'm doing it for investment reasons it's just where I can afford it, I like the knowledge of knowing it is rare. I just wonder if this is a bit of a folly now.

Hi Guys, been a while since I posted, I've not had any money so have tried not to look at coins so that I wouldn't be tempted Anyway, I have dipped my toes in again, and have bought the following 1787 6d off eBay. In all likelihood I'm going to contact the seller because what I have received is not the item in the picture. However, before I do that, could you just cast your eyes over it? I notice that the "A"s in Gratia on the obverse are unbarred, also on the reverse, the "A.T.E.T.E" seems to be more bold than the rest of the letters and the "87" in the 1787 does not seem to be too well aligned. What are your thoughts on this?

Apologies for the tongue in cheek subject heading, however, I was wondering if people could give some 'business advice'. I have been going through my granddad's pennies I inherited and now knowing that if there's a little H or KN on certain dates, makes them a more rare coin. In so doing, I have discovered the following: 5 x 1912 H 1 x 1918 KN 2 x 1919 H None of them are in anything better than Fine and I'm not even considering keeping them, so in terms of realising the best price for them, would people advise selling them in little "lots" (obviously limited by the fact there are fewer 1918 and 1919) or sell them all individually? Hijacking Goomolique's thread, I now have CCGB 2014 and Grading British Coins and have just ordered a copy of Freeman. Could anyone advise other key texts but also, are there any specifically devoted around the George III reign? Thanks, Richard

I've just bought what on the surface looks like a very nice condition 1935 Florin, however the die rotation seems to be more like 90 degrees (though I note on my other florins from the same period, they seem a bit off, but maybe more like 45 degrees). Is this a commonly faked coin and are there any other tell tale signs to look out for? Aside from that apparent anomaly there's nothing that would arouse suspicion.

Hi All, in my newbie excitement I saw what I thought looked like a lovely 1787 Sixpence (with hearts) on ebay last week, when I saw it, it was closing in 10mins so no time to ask for advice. The price seemed ok compared to what I've seen in books (£39) and the coin did look a "bute" to me and I saw no one else had bid so thought why not?? Today was the first time I could collect from the PO and in hand, again, it looks a stunner. However there's always been that niggling doubt of "why did no one else bid". Have I been rinsed or not? Have I seen somewhere that people use acetone (from pharmacists, not nail varnish remover) for their coins prior to storing them. I've finally got around to ordering some 2x2s and am going to start sorting things out and want to make sure I follow the correct procedure. Is there anything else to do? Cheers

Having googled the 1933 penny last week, I've been looking more and more at pennies and am really starting to appreciate their beauty. I'm starting to think that my collecting focus is going to shift from Georgie Boy the third, to pennies.

So the 5kg of old and foreign coins arrived today. On a very brief inspection I've already found C19th pennies in better condition than mine as well as some current Euros and then a real hotch potch. Any interesting discoveries I'll post later.
