  1. So you couldn't mint your own coinage, but you could hand out medals in change !

    Dnw Today

Hi Paulus I won a nice George IV crown (lot 2607) for 380 against an estimate of 400-450. But my big OMG moment was winning lot 2568 for 750 against an estimate of 900-1200 (I think 750 is probably reasonable enough though). It is a beautiful, beautiful, beautiful George II crown and will be the oldest crown I have, as well as by far the most expensive coin. After the last DNW sale (my first) where just about everything I watched soared over the high estimate I didn't even bother stay up to watch this one, These were naughty pre-bids. I only found out when I woke up this morning. It's a nice surprise, but I wasn't even planning to bid after Nobles last week. Will mean I be will sitting around Christmas holidays having a few beers watching the cricket instead of heading to the Gold Coast for a few days ha ha ha. Well done to anyone who got anything nice !!

    Dnw Today

Oops I just couldn't help myself and put in a few bids below or at the minimum and actually got a couple. DNW get the invoices out super-fast which is nice (if it can ever be 'nice' to receive a bill ha haha ha).

    Noble Sale 104

Okay I received an invoice by email a little earlier, and it took about half an hour to show up in my account at Nobles. The invoice appears to only be for the lots I submitted pre-bids for, not the successful live bids. This is okay with me as I have a daily limit on bank transfers anyway. Can't wait to get the first lot, contains a very nice George I roses and plumes shilling which I can't wait to lay hands on ! Good luck with your pennies. When I successfully bid at DNW it took just on 2 weeks to receive my parcel so you should have the pennies well before Christmas if the southerly trade winds are as fair as the northerly ones. cheers Garrett.

No - I haven't received an invoice either. Emailed them around noon yesterday (Mon) and no reply either. In my case I know I have won lots, as I bid live online and got the congratulatory messages that my a couple of my bids were successful. Fingers crossed for some news today.....

Did you hear back about the penny yet Accumulator ? It's 1.15pm Friday in Sydney now, so hopefully you will hear soon (if not already). The penny sure will do a great job in filling a gap in your cabinet !

    Noble Sale 104

I was just tuning into the ancient Greek gold. Had the audio going today as I am not on broadband. One lot the auctioneer called for $1000-00 a couple of times then there a voice 'I got a bid for $1600.00'. What the hell ?? Obviously not his money. Commission based bidding ? Maybe I misheard ?

    Noble Sale 104

Okay good luck !! It's early Thursday here, and the auctions goes into Friday so you might take a while to get the confirmation.

    Noble Sale 104

The 1837 penny is listed as sold for $800.00 in the catalogue. If you bid $800.00 and were the high bidder I cannot see why you wouldn't have it bagged, Accumulator.

    Noble Sale 104

I think you can check the 1837 penny as there is a prices realised list on the website. I agonised over putting in a low bid for the cleaned William IV penny but in the end didn't. I picked up a heap of stuff, would have been a heap more but some lots where I was the highest bidder appears to be unsold, presumably because the reserve was not met. Fair to say my coin budget is busted and agree having too many auctions close together is not good. I am glad it's over. I assembled a spreadsheet of lots I was interested in, researched catalogue and past auction prices, examined photo's closely and compared to photo's of authentic coins, examined photo's to see if the grading looked reasonable, worked out how much to bid etc etc etc. Enjoyable but a bit of work !! Anyway, congrats to anyone who picked up a nice coin. Looked like there were some bargains made interspersed among the high bids I could not understand ! cheers Garrett.

    Why Are...

It's a nice coin in a way. I had a half-penny a lot like that when I was a kid, and it was one of my most treasured possessions !

    1861 One Penny.

Have to agree it is a great forum too, I am very, very happy to have found it ! oh, and yes good find mate, well done. Saw a ripped up council garden myself on the walk home from work this afternoon and lamented the fact I don't have a detector (..... yet). cheers Garrett

    Noble Sale 104

Thanks for the advice, yes it would be best to be wary. I've just read through some more posts on this forum and elsewhere in regards to the 1763 shilling, interesting but scary. I think if I do ever get one I would also be inclined to get a third party to double check it. Did yours weigh the correct amount ? Did you measure the specific gravity (I have no experience here, just been watching YouTube videos) ?

    Noble Sale 104

Just looking closely at the catalogue. I am interested in picking up a 1763 shilling at some time in the future, but worried about all the fakes that are out there. Noble has two in the auction coming up, lots 2385 and 2954. Lot 2954 has the scratches from the kings mouth, and the open topped letters on the obverse. This looks risky, I thought buying from an auction house like this would be totally safe !
  21. Yes it is a nice penny, and a great web coin cabinet !!

  23. thanks mate ! I'll watch that when I am back in Brissie (in Melbourne playing chess right now) and not on prepaid mobile broadband (cost a fortune to watch a video of that length). Cheers Garrett.
  24. Without checking online, and probably making a fool of myself, didn't Edward IV's line not get very far on the throne (with his brother Richard III blamed for killing his sons). Maybe it was Edward III in the program ? cheers Garrett.
  25. there are even counterfeits of halfpenny tokens ? I had initially found it surprising when I read of real halfpennies being counterfeited. this hobby is fascinating !! Good luck with getting to the bottom of your token erl2.
