    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Dave, sorry to jump in on this message but I really think your over thinking this all, there's aren't conspiracies out there. I don't sell gold proofs or these graded £5 as I simply can't afford them, like most collectors, however abroad there has been for years high demand for this type of coin and they've driven the market place for them. If they are willing to pay the prices mentioned it doesn't mean people are pushing an agenda of greed. Im sure you've sold coins at a profit in the past, and if a dealer does there's no harm.
  2. does anyone know whether this is now how Spink will be doing their auctions (with the exception of maybe one or two a year if they get good consignments) ?

Is the Royal Mint that desperate for money?

yes definitely the same coin David

Is the Royal Mint that desperate for money?

This was my thinking, i'd assume they now have a better specimen in their collection and are using this duplicate as a marketing tool. Aren't sovereign rarities now joined in some way with the Royal Mint ?
  5. @Paulus bought a superb one from us a while back, that from memory was NGC 63 graded (but removed from Holder)
  6. I'd suggest the wear is from general circulation and handling. The quality of engraving on this particular issue is very good and with the amount of fine detail the design exhibits it will show up any minor wear. The highest points centrally appear to be worn which also suggests signs of circulation, however its a nice example and still in a collectable grade.
  7. for those who havent got the first edition or to those who are considering whether its worth buying the revised edition, its well worth it in my opinion. Although the coloured photographs of the coins arent the best, there are lots of new additons to the book including a large section on hoards, and a more detailed coverage of the provinicial mints
  8. I picked up the new copy of E. Besly's revised Coins and Medals of the English Civil War book and he mentions recent attempts to link HC to Hawarden Castle as in his opinion they are an attempt to "muddy the waters"
  9. 6 months worth of butter, cheese, bacon, bier (beer ?), Sider (cider ?) for up to 200 men. Seems like the royalist soldiers weren't so improverish
  10. Found it here https://johannes.library.manchester.ac.uk/luna/servlet/detail/Manchester~91~1~245749~117256:The-taking-of-Hartlebury-castle?sort=Reference_Number%2CReference_Number%2CPage%2CPage
  11. I seem to remember seeing a civil war letter from hartlebury castle listing what was surrendered by the royalists after its capture somewhere.
  12. Do you mean Hartlebury Castle when refering to HC ?
  13. From memory i think there may have been a Newark with signs of the hallmark in the Bobly collection spink sold in one of the last SNC's (cant remember the date of issue 2011/2 ?). I bought the scarborough and colchester besieged electrotypes they had for sale in the listings
  14. I no longer have the one that was discovered in the welsh marches area but have obtained a different one thanks you again for the useful comments, i’ll Try to use what info I have and piece something together possibly quoting some of your opinions if that’s ok ?
  15. Thank you Rob We have one ourselves and we have been trying to put together some kind of historical background however as you mentioned there seems to be minimal referances to them (in anywhere we have looked) in any earlier publication. The fact that there are now 13 known, this imo would rule out them being a contempary forgeries. Bull lists the provenances of 12 of the known examples (this was recorded prior to the discovery of the one pictured earlier in the thread) and with examples being traced back to the likes of Rostrum, Cumberland Clark and Montagu.
  16. Just been revisiting the above thread, @Rob are there any SNC or BNJ articles on the Welsh Marches Halfcrowns that you are aware of ?

    DNW today

There really were some exceptional coins on offer, and the sale yielded some very interesting results. Although unique lot 83 lacked appeal for me in hand, i had a good go at the ex bridgewater house 1642 exeter Halfcrown but had to stop bidding. Really regret not chasing a few other lots that i was the under bidder on but you can't win them all i guess. @Paulus that was a nice coin, much nicer than the pictures showed
  18. I wasnt sure whether they did as i know someone who sent a crown to PCGS recently that he retoned artifically and it came back as AU details cleaned
  19. Perhaps they thought it may have been artificially toned ?
