Here's another example from the Benjamin Button 'Rejuvenation issue' Coin collection.

A 'Very Fine' Cromwell farthing became an 'Extremely Fine' Cromwell farthing with a concomitant EF price, all within the space of a year.

    Always struck me as strange.

One thing I will say regarding this coin is that I wasn't at Baldwins when this happened and the responsible party(s) have  left.

Wow, I've just checked out your website for the Edward VIII's - fantastic. The coin is No. 1, provenance unknown. Hopefully Spink will give more details when the catalogue is published.

I don't think they will, I know the chap who is selling it and he is a very private individual. I am virtually certain it is the Mark Rasmussen one because you will also see the 1808 penny is for sale in that collection also in September.

Maybe he was searching for a different word, couldn't find one, and so used a relatively modern word like "update", putting it in quotation marks to indicate it would do, but wasn't his first choice. Something like that anyway.

Colin's "update" - was a handwritten list of each item number that had been sold off the list which he then photocopied on his fax machine. He would send this to anyone that was unlucky when they phoned up for an item. Inverted commas to emphasise it was his special touch of customer service.

  4. I wasn't aware of the difficulties, I was at the sale but still did my bids online - I don't want people to see which items i am bidding on. I have downloaded the app on my phone and works really well with no registration issues, was registered within a few minutes. I realise that many people won't have the app so believe me I will get the auction team to look into this as I can see there are still clearly quite a few issues.

  5. I must admit I haven't logged on over Christmas, but do usually follow the forum regularly.

I apologise as I have only just read his thread. With regard to CC doing an auction for a collection, it is completely dependent on what they think the collection will achieve.

The reason for this is that they can't do a monthly sales list due to the time involved in cataloguing the collection and the time it takes for the auction to run it's cause. As they won't likely charge a sellers commission and in the past have only charged 15 % buyers premium it would need to realise a figure of say 100k + to make it worthwhile. It would be lee's call entirely but that is what he is likely to say.

Spink sold a Proof 65 in their New York Auction in January for $15000 which at the time was around £11,000 which with premium would be a touch over £13000.

LOL. I don't think there are too many coins valued at over £37k !!

You'd be surprised how many were over that value for our auction in New York, we had to ship all the items out there so they could be viewed at the show. Plus we do have one or two items over that value in stock ;-)

  8. When we do a coin fair in America any coin over the value of 37,000gbp (i think, the figure is around this value) needs an export licence, you have to provide a picture, provenance, value etc, if they are happy with the information provided it normally takes around 7 days. Its a real hassle though but necessary.

  9. I was very surprised to read this thread as I know Simon Willis and have only had good dealings with him. He was originally a collector who became a full time dealer when he retired. Roderick Richardson knows him very well too. He may have possibly bought this coin in good faith as a frosted VIP proof and then hence listed it on ebay. I find it difficult to believe he would intentionally try to deceive and would also be very surprised if he did not offer a full refund. Did you try to contact him through his website?

  10. I have read this thread with great interest and many points are very valid regarding Baldwins website and prices etc. I inherited many coins with high costs when I started at Baldwins last year and was in many instances amazed at what the previous team had paid for items. It is my intention to go through the coins on the website and try and reduce where I can the prices to a more sensible level. It is just a matter of getting the time but I will slowly get it done. With regard to the website, again I agree completely, we have changed it once this year as a temporary fix but it is far from perfect. Over the next 2-3 months we will be changing the website again and making it far more user friendly.

With regard to some of the higher priced items, I would always consider giving a generous discount to clear some of these high priced items.

I'm guessing Rob would know? Would be interesting to hear Neil's thoughts on the grade for this one,  especially if the grade were to include the issues, as seems fashionable nowadays.

It's been a while since I posted on here and meant to come on months ago!!! This I'm guessing was an auction lot for one of our sales last week? I don't do any of the grading or cataloguing for the auctions, consultants are used. I do the grading on the retail side, though any coins on the website which were there before I started were done by the old team.

Congratulations, Neil, and may I extend a big thank you for all the excellent servce you have provided at Colin Cooke over the years. Hope your new role is successful, and fulfilling. Well played.

Will Lee now assume the reins at CC?

Thank you that's very kind!!  Yes he will, Iam still the owner but trust him to run it in the same way we always have!! Lee has worked for colin Cooke for 15 years and is quite adept at dealing etc and I wouldn't have made the decision if I wasn't confident he could run it to the same standards!! Hopefully I will hear all sorts of things in advance while at baldwins and be able to provide you all with upcoming news in advance!!
