That's why he showed the picture so he can get in the shows free with a dealer I would consider hiring him ;-)

Yes it is his 3rd time, I think that this is a good idea Colin, everyone knows someone who is fairly "handy" or at least large in size, I bet for £50 to £100 you could get them as a minder if only to come with you to and from a show

    Coin Robbery

Me too. I think that sometimes dealers (not just coin delears) get very blase about the value of the stock that they have with them or on them. There have also been frequent and targetted robberies of several Portobello Road antique dealers in the recent months to the extent that the stall holders and shop owners have been asking for some sort of police protection when closing up stalls in the evenings and opening their shops in the early mornings. It doesnt help that our politically correct traffic wardens, sorry, Police Force, appear to treat robbery and theft as just an annoying form filling excercise for them ...."here's your crime reference number"...another box ticked Sarge.

    Coin Robbery

It seems Lloyd was robbed when he stopped off on his way home, he stopped for a quick pint and seems while he was inside ordering the thieves smashed his back window but strangely his alarm didn't go off and he was only inside for a matter of minutes he drank his pint outside where he could see his car but seems he only realised when he returned. Rumour has it that some thieves can intercept some cars alarms with a device this disabling them. He seemed a little shaken but otherwise ok.

If you see him Neil, please let him know we were all concerned to hear about it and hope he's OK and that insurance will cover it (or the coins are recovered of course). Yes absolutely I will let him know!!

True I am not sure he left his vehicle unattended, I will find out the full facts tomorrow at the show tomorrow!!

    Coin Robbery

Usually in Birmingham and larger shows it is the dealers with a large quantity of gold that are targeted!!!

    Coin Robbery

There have been a number of robberies a few have happened in Birmingham, I am sure Dave craddock was followed home he is local to Birmingham, 3 assailants robbed him and actually sprayed him with pepper spray!! I am sure that is correct - this is why I always check whether I am being followed - fortunately it is a fair distance back to Manchester and the speed I drive I think I would be fairly confident if I was being followed!!! Still u can't be too cautious!!!

We use a canon on a tripod with special lights, the setup cost abt £1000 ten years ago, I thought about changing but we are still really happy with the results!!

    Coin Robbery

Yes I have to say it is always a worry especially when we do the London shows and it's an over nighter!!! Birmingham tomorrow so I will have to keep checking my rear view mirror on the way back to make sure I am not being followed!!!!

The list is on the bnta website, fortunately it seems he only had coins under £1000 therefore not losing the entirety of his stock

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

On the other hand, while I wouldn't pay £424 either, there is a phenomenal difference in scarcity between VF (or sub-EF) examples, and genuine EF or better. My own example (MUST upgrade!) is definitely sub-EF : 1836 halfc obv.jpg Interestingly I have had more high grade block capitals in the last 10 years than high grade script and Spink claims block is rarer!! Just thought I would share that although maybe irrelevant ;-) I hope you will be offering high grade block WWs for less than their equivalent in script then Neil? Paulus you never know might do you a really good deal on the next one I get in ;-) Keep me in mind, hopefully I will have the readies when the time comes! In selling mode at the mo, but hopefully not for too long and not selling the very best coins from my main focus! Here's my (script) reverse, would be looking for a similar or better grade in block: That is a very strong reverse is the obverse equally as good?? Sadly not, perhaps it's virtually impossible to have both, as seems to be the case with some issues! I guess there is only a certain thickness of silver to work with (unless that is a ridiculously ignorant comment?): Photo shadow on the truncation but it is script! No not at all, I suspected the obverse may be a little weaker and agree I don't think it Is possible in that series to have a fully struck up obverse and reverse unless it is a proof!! Even so it is still a very nice coin and you have done well to acquire it!!!

Obverse isn't even EF, reverse is better though.Cleaned/dipped perhaps also I wouldn't grade either side as EF, tons of wear in the centre of the reverse ... The centre of the reverse is quite often weak on this design. Here's a high grade example with similar weakness. Agreed, with this series you often get a super strong obverse and on most minty examples the reverse has weakness, this is purely in the strike not wear!!

    Brand new to collecting

Wow. So he has a collection of low grade higher value coins worth about £50K or so. A few thousand I can see being spent without a bit of research. A few hundred thousand???????? Caveat emptor. I too have picked up old collections where the realisation of what was purchased against market value was a bit of a shock, though not on that scale. Mine were typically a 4 figure sum for things worth a couple of hundred pounds tops.............. multiplied a few dozen times. Every example I noted had a lot of glossy sales blurb with an image of an example of the coin provided in high grade, but the contents of the box were typically fine. The only exception being proofs where the coin was virtually as struck, but the price paid many times that of market value. Yes to say this collector has been well and truly stitched up is an understatement!! Which makes me wonder how many others have fallen foul!!

    Brand new to collecting

Interestingly the the article in the coin probe wasn't over the inflated prices of them selling modern silver but over a chap who came to see me to sell me some old rare coins. Yes they actually sell old coins such as hammered gold etc to cut the story short he came round with a selection of coins he had a Charles the I unite, common one in VF that I would sell for £2000 they had charged him £9000, he had a gf 2 guineas worth around 1500 they had charged him 8000, a James I untie VF again worth about 1800 they had charged him 5000 and a 1937 gold set worth 5000 tops they had charged him 20000!!!! Let's is just say he was not happy when I told him the true value and it turns out he has spent 250000 with them over two years!!!!
  24. If I have a client who tells me he is interested in a particular lot and he tells me has more than I have to bid then I will stay away from the lot, I don't want him to have to pay top whack just for the sake of it!!! Grey area indeed how anyone could ever prove I have not bid on that particular lot for that reason would be pretty hard!! If I read on here that some of you guys were particularly interested in a lot and I knew you would pay more I would stay away, I don't want you to have to pay more for the sake of it!!! The only winners are the auction houses and at 24% buyers commission plus what they charge the seller they have become too greedy!!!
  25. Benny it's different if you have viewed the coin but not everybody can get to view every auction, therefore if you go off the auction house's description and it has been mis described you are well within your right to return!!
