Dear Jaggy
I have been struggeling with the 1887 sixpences for several years. I am not worried about all the R/V R/I or JEB on trunk, these are the basics from Davies. I am concerned about The filled crown on the reverse which seems to have two obverse dies. I am listing 7,8,9,10 obverse varieties of R/I inc A/A. I am worried about the different obverses that go with type three reverse and indeed the two main varieties of type 3 reverse. Would you be a good person to talk to? Looking at your profile picture you seem to know a bit about 1887 and wonder if you got anything from the sale of Alfred Bole sixpences sold by DNW.

Many thanks for your message. Unfortunately - and despite my profile photo which is the Aluminium pattern struck for Spink; the only one of those patterns I own - I don't know too much about 1887 beyond the basic Davies varieties most of which I have. I suspect you know a lot more about 1887 sixpences than I do.
Incidentally, a couple of the 1887 patterns did come up at Heritage in the last two or three years. I was the under-bidder on a silver pattern and a gold pattern fetched (I think) around $20,000.
While I am an avid sixpence collector, I actually prefer Victoria Young Head to the Jubilee Head coins and have been very focused on those for the last two or three years. I am now beginning to widen my sixpence interest to earlier coins and have just acquired a couple of James I. That said, I will buy 1887 if it is a particularly attractive coin or if it is one I don't have as yet.
I did not by anything at Bole. A very hectic professional schedule led me to spend around 10 years away from collecting. Not that I lost interest, I was just too busy to spend the time that the hobby deserved. I am now trying to make up for lost time.
My apologies that I am probably not the best person to help in this area. But let's keep in touch as it is always good to exchange ideas, thoughts and knowledge.
Charles
