It would be nice if restoring and repairing of cabinets can be a bigger industry. Vintage cabinet can last a long time and it's sensible to restore them for the sake of the environment and cost.

I am not referring to any incident in particular. Bit it is difficult to protect people from scams partly due to their own greed. For example, you sometimes see scammers using the ancient three-card to fleece money from people in London. Some scammers also play on people's sympathy to part with money. (Please feel sorry for my young child, or elderly and ill relative etc) Education can help people avoid losing big money in scams to an extent. But greed can convince some people to believe in the most ridiculous stories (or so the scammers would hope). An infamous seller once claimed that her special banknotes arrived by "airmail". She woke up one morning and find them attached to a balloon trapped in a tree and they are worth thousands. People who believe a story like that can't be saved.

And why should anyone give away an object for free if someone actually did bid £8k for it?

Your date is on the left and the date of an example sold by London Coins Auction is on the right for comparison. If you balance the coin on a finger and gently tap on the edge with another coin, you can hear if it rings like silver. Copper coins and nickel coins sound very different to silver when tapped this way. (Try out on some scrap coins and you will see what I mean). Wear a glove if the coin still has residual lustre and you want to be extra careful. (Obviously, you won't want to do that with an UNC coin). The coin should be genuine if it is made of silver.

Of course not. They have no knowledge about coins, but are simply hoping that some junk in their procession might be worth a fortune without them knowing. Hoping that they might have a winning lottery ticket that would change their lives. They are going by "false hope is better than no hope" philosophy. Many of them have not got any feedback for selling.

I don't think there is any problem if the coins are kept separately in capsules. But if humidity is high, then keeping some desiccant permanently in the box would be a good idea.

Getting electronic copies of annual catalogues is a great idea and also good for the planet. Hardcopies take up space on the bookshelves. I would still want hard copies of books like ESC as they only get updated once every two decades.

VAT is always payable on buyer's premium. Some auction houses like LCA simply combine the VAT with their buyer's premium to give an overall charge. Buyer's premium inc. VAT so to speak. Other auction houses like DNW don't combine VAT with their premium. I suppose their premium is already high and combining VAT would make it an even higher figure which is not good for marketing.
