  1. I always look at the scraped silver in a local scrap dealers stall he is at all the local collectors fairs /flea markets.

    The saddest thing is the silver medals from the first world war probably sold for £17.50 or so , it really was not worth selling them 10 years ago - they would have fetched a £5 note.

    To just hold one and think about what the holder had to do for the medal breaks your heart.

    £17.50? The darn things should be priceless!


  2. Did you know that a tax on soap was a major earner for the government for many years, earning as much as 10% of all government revenue until it's abolition in 1853.

    To raise a similar amount now tax on soap would have to be around £100 a bar based on an average consumption of ten bars a year by the average person.

    This also assumes that usage does not go down with people using fairy liquid or other related products instead of soap :lol:
