  1. Hello good people of the forum. I'm looking for a really nice Edward I class 7a penny (with rose on breast). Preferably one in tip-top condition with no ghosting or scratches, and with a good central strike. Cheers, Descartes

    Recent Hammered Acquisitions

Sadly, I know little about patterns but they are certainly very interesting. I hadn't seen the Marrian and Gausby pattern before ... I love the high relief portrait of the 'young head' Queen Victoria! If I had deeper pockets, I'd like to own a decent siege piece one day - the Ormonde crown was indeed a lovely coin! I nearly won a nice little Ormonde sixpence last year - but alas, I came in a close second.

    Thanks Stu!

    Rainbow hammy

Please keep me in the loop when they go for sale Stu. As you know, I'm BIG on collecting pennies from this period! I have some gaps in my Plantagenet series (especially Edward 1st) and always looking to pay good money for top specimens. Seems to be as dry as a nun's with good quality on the market at the minute. Wish some of those metal detector chaps would unearth a couple of large Plantagenet hoards!

Hi Dave, how did the pirate festival go? Was there a good crowd?

    Edward IV coinage (2nd reign)

Thanks Dave! That makes perfect sense now I couldn't see that yesterday, and appreciate you putting me on the right track!
  8. When I bought this recent Edward IV penny it was tagged as type XXI, London mint. Delving into the coinage of Edward IV it seems only the first XI types were Edward IV, the rest (types XII-XXII) are Henry VI (restored). My coin clearly has i.m. cinquefoil (like a type XXI penny should have), but the obverse legend reads Edward. Can anybody explain the classification to me as I seem to be getting myself confused. Many thanks, Descartes

    Bristol penny

Definitely need to get myself a detector too! I seem to be missing out on all the excitement. What could be better than stretching the legs in the countryside and hunting for coins!

    Mints and Moneyers

Hello chaps, I'm a bit embarrassed to ask such a question so far into my hammered penny collecting, but is there a definitive list of 'moneyers by mint town' published anywhere? I'd like to get a list for the mint in Salisbury. I sometimes read listings like 'there are only two known coins of this moneyer' for this type, very scarce, etc and have been wondering how they know this! Thanks, Descartes

    Mints and Moneyers

Thanks Rob. I really must get a copy of both the North volumes then. They are quite pricey, but I guess they are worth the investment in the long run!

    Plantagenet Coins

Not a single nice Plantagenet coin for sale anywhere on Numisbids or any dealer websites at the moment - except a couple on the next Spink USA auction! Where are they all hiding??? hahaha

    Plantagenet Coins

Hi Stu! What a great coin. I love the iridescence and toning, and the reverse is superb!
  17. Chaps, I've been looking for a decent Henry II Tealby type penny (Class A) for a while now. There's a nice one coming up on auction soon, but it doesn't give a definite mint town, just 'Cant?'. Can any of you experts confirm or deny this for me? I'd want to be certain of the mint location before I place a bid. For some reason it would aggravate me having a coin in my collection I couldn't correctly identify. Thanks, Descartes

    Plantagenet Coins

Has the market gone completely balmy! In my opinion it's not even the most attractive coin... and the marks on the face and crown annoy me for some reason - I wouldn't have paid $425 for this particular coin.

Hi Stu, Here's the info for S.1367a from the newest Spink. The actual plate coin is a bit crappy... yours is a lot better actually!

    Henry VII - advice please

Please could I pick an experts brains on my little Henry VII penny. I know it's of the type: one pillar of throne visible, but I'm having difficulties narrowing it down further. Which of the following options is this coin: Type IIa One Pillar above the Leg of the Throne on the King's Right Side; Legend as before—mint-mark heraldic cinquefoil—trefoil stops—lettering A. The reverse cross ending is no. 2 and the sceptre and pillar are lis-topped Type IIb One Pillar above the Leg of the Throne on the King's Right Side; No mint-mark—trefoil stops—lettering A. The reverse cross ending is sometimes no. 2 and sometimes no. 7. The sceptre and pillar are trefoil-topped. Were it not for the existence of the two sorts of reverse found linked with this obverse, one would have placed it as earlier than the heraldic cinquefoil. Type IIc One Pillar above the Leg of the Throne on the King's Right Side; Mint-mark lis—rosette stops—lettering B—reverse cross ending is no. 7. The sceptre and pillar are trefoil-topped.

    Henry VII - advice please

Thanks Rob I guess I will need to find a better and more usable classification for the pennies of Henry VII. I'm currently using an old classification I found in an edition of BNJ.
