  1. Yes thanks for sharing those Garys - I enjoyed watching them all. This might seem a silly question, but are all silver coin proofs made of precious metals?

    Hello everyone

So what part of the country is that then Red? I must admit I have never heard of that one. Funny that we don't seem to have many nick names for todays coinage - apart from a "quid" I suppose. Wherever did that one come from?
  3. No coins for me, but LOTS of books on the subject! That " Splendid Shilling" is an intersting read Tom - a good one for spouting of nuggets of shilling related facts and trivia around the dinner table... Rob - I gave my hubby a homemade "voucher" entitling the holder to spend a "modest" amount of money on "percieved useful tech" read into that what you will. We have just come back from Currys with a Freeview HD recorder, three XBox games and a Kindle.... perhaps I will consider a three figure sum for a coin after all!

    1819 Shilling

I have a 1819 shilling just like that...
  5. Evening all. I have a 1926 shilling (modified I think ) which is ever so slightly bigger than my other shillings which has been puzzling me. I know its slightly bigger as it doesn’t fit into any of the “shilling spaces†in my 1902 – 1936 Whitman folder ( I know this may not be the best way of storing my coins!) All the rest seem to fit perfectly snugly. Do you think it could be a fake?

    I hate xmas

Sorry to hear about the tooth infection Gollum. When my husband had a painfull abcess he found that placing a soluable Nurophen tablet ( Meltos I think they are called ) right next to the area it numbed the pain for a while.

    Beginners Luck

I think like a lot of new “collectors†I became interested in acquiring coins because it seemed a relatively easy and inexpensive means of having a little piece of history. As my sons were learning about different monarchies and historical events in their history lessons I thought it might be a means of helping them appreciate this by giving them a coin that might have been in someone’s pocket at that time. (I remember that there was a mention of a shilling in the film the “Kings Speechâ€) I chose shillings because I liked the size, consistent uniform shape (1816-1990), and the fact that they were once a precious metal. As it seems with many, I have started with the idea of a date run with no real knowledge of mintages, varieties, rarities etc. I never really intended to collect for investment purposes other than the romantic notion that I might have something to remind my boys of and to perhaps one day pass down. And in any case I like collecting beautiful shiny objects I hear your message loud and clear about quality not quantity. I haven’t yet decided if spending a three figure sum on a single coin is something I would want to pursue. Getting the best value for money is something I am mindful of, and of course buying something that’s authentic is very important. I find it quite amazing that through this forum one is able to access such a wealth of knowledge imparted with such willingness and warmth from what I realise to be some highly regarded experts in the field. Its becoming a hobby in itself just learning all about numismatics – even without buying any coins!

    a fake?

Yes you are probably right. However I do have 7 of these folders and it doesn't seem to fit into any of the spaces.I take your point about it being a higher grade than some of my other coins Argumentus, but I have at least a dozen that I would have said were a similar grade and these seem to fit.I'll have a look to see if I can get hold of some digital calipers! Many thanks for your comments once again.

    a fake?

Well that's good to know, thanks Nick. It still leaves me with an unfilled gap in my folder though (and no space for a modified version)!
  10. Debbie

    a fake?

Its only very slightly larger, almost as if the rim bows outward a little and grooves along the edge stick out too much.I'm not sure how I would test if is silver? It weighs 6g, but my scales are not super acurate.

    Hello everyone

When I said "older people" I really meant elderly. I wasn't trying to imply that members here were ancient....

    Hello everyone

Gosh, it must have been so confusing for everyone when it all changed over to decimal! How on earth did all the older people cope with the changes? I find it especially odd that a pound still converted to a new pound, but a penny was no longer worth a new penny. I am sure some of you will have first hand experience of this!

    Hello everyone

OK, Thanks for that Gollum / Coinery! You know I really do need to get my head around the pre-decimal system ( especially on this site!) I obviously know that the old shilling is equivalent to 5p today, and that an old penny is equivalent to what was half a pence (i think)... is there a conversion table available anywhere?

    Hello

Hi all. I don't know how many ladies you get on this forum, but I started becoming interested in coin collecting initially in an attempt to get my 11year old son interested. My sucess with this has been limited.... I myself however have become hooked on collecting silver shillings and love the idea of having a nice example of one for each year from 1816 - 1990 ( old large 5 pence piece . ) I certainly don't have lots of money to spend on coins - I think the max amount I have spent on a coin is £50 and I tend to buy most of my shillings from ebay.I have bought a couple from members of this forum and from this website.I have only been collecting for about 18 months and have familiarised myself with Spink and PJ Davis British silver coins. Are there any other books that I should read that deal with shillings? Oh and is there any way of detecting a forged 1905 shilling? Thanks in advance.

    How could this happen?

And how would you go about grading something like this? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/1918-PCGS-MS63-silver-SHILLING-WORLD-WAR-coin-King-GEORGE-V-/400262018596?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item5d3179b624 Oh and how do you shorten a link!

    How could this happen?

Cerbera - I didn't even know what the nose to S/ SV was full stop .... now at least I know its the letters around the outside of the coin and its the direction of kings nose that its refering to!! I have just taken that its the previous deep cut portrait that is most desirable in a 1921 shilling!
