    Artificial toning thread on CU

Just as a post-script to the CU thread, it seems the seller in question fabricated his whole story.

    Artificial toning thread on CU

So even PCGS slabs are fallible. 18 pages on that topic in a matter of hours just shows how much of a stink this has kicked up. What does that make them now besides glorified capsules? We now know that coins can be AT'ed whilst in them, counterfeits have been slabbed, and grading is often dodgy (as we saw in that MS65 Morgan thread I think someone posted a few days ago). People will still pay ludicrous money for them though.

    German Coins

That looks very promising, Chris! Once there are higher grade pieces in my area, I shall be sure to buy some.
  4. Just imagine if it were an American error! The price would go bananas.

    Exams and tests galore!

Thanks everyone! Whilst I agree that the exams are perhaps easier than they used to be, the driving test certainly isn't. You've got to do a theory test which you never used to have to do, and since it's been spun off to the DSA, examiners have been very picky. They even ent through a phase of failing drivers who clipped the white of a mini roundabout! ps My economics teacher says that degrees now are like old A-levels, and A-levels now are like old GCSEs!

    Two Guineas

I don't really know if Spink is accurate in this series. They generally have higher-than-realised prices and should only be used for a rough guide really. Whether this applies to George II guineas, I don't know.

    Two Guineas

    Looks authentic to me.

    HELP PLEASE

Usually I'd just do View > Toolbars and uncheck them if they're there, but if it's spyware then it's a totally different kettle of fish. Try googling the name of the search bar and if it's notorious (such as the mysearch bar) there are walkthroughs of how to get rid. Or switch to Firefox

    Ebay scams

Although most of us collect non-US stuff, there is a US seller who is regularly posted on the CU boards. He goes by the name of dmplrainbow with a feedback score 2131 and 98.6% positive. Sounds alright, but his buyers must be blind...look at his pictures! Number 1 Number 2 Number 3 Number 4 A child could do better with a paintbrush than he could with Photoshop. For further laughs, see his feedback.

    British Museum

I spent the last week in London, and whilst on my travels visited the British Museum. Armed with my camera, I took a few photographs of exhibits I thought were quite interesting. They are posted below for your viewing pleasure... Some dies: Some dies with the finished product: A Gothic piece with its collar: A whole set of dies: A plaster cast of a full size pound before being reduced: ...on a reducing machine:

    Happy Birthday Master jmd

    Congratulations!
  12. Sounds good to me. It's a bit offstruck to boot.
  13. Congratulations, Sylvester. Have a jolly day!

    Artifical toning?

It bothers me on some US forums how dipping coins is taken so lightly. The Oh-I'll-just-dip-X-Y-Z-to-bump-it-up-a-point-or-two syndrome.

    Super work!

The campaign medals one is quite outstanding. I thought that the Spink cover this year was a bit off the mark in comparison to previous years.

    Happy Birthday Geordie!

Hot tubs in the sun are fantastic! With a pitcher of Pimm's, the heat won't bother you one bit!

    Congratulations, Geordie!

    Something for Oli.

Consider it sold! I shall PM you with some bits and bobs I'll buy as well.
  24. To digress slightly on the subject of estimates, did anyone see Princess Margaret's stuff go last week? There was a purple leather jewellery box for £350-$500 estimate that went for near £50,000. Perhaps they just do it to hook people in - same with coins?
  25. ..and? We need pictures! I bought the 1860 Weyl tin farthing to make up a set as issued which was my primary aim. Probably unique, they all came out of the same Glens sale on 15/12/93 and are probably Murdoch 3 lots 689 or 690 (part). I also bought the young head copper uniface trial ex- Murdoch 3 lot 675. It's lovely!
