eBay are making money and are too big to care about one seller selling fakes, or as they will see it "alleged fakes", similarly I think the police would firstly need a complaint from a victim, but again it will be too complex to get tied up in are they fakes or not and did he know they were fakes or not. HMRC might be interested if he has not paid his tax but again if he does, they are not going to be interested either. A sad state of affairs.

Cleaning grubby coins is one thing but polishing can add scratches and remove high spot detail, so best left undone in my opinion. Dave, you seem to be unhappy with some of your purchases and perceived mistakes, but remember you are just learning a new hobby, you are bound to find it difficult to start with, but the most important think is to learn, this forum is great for asking questions, but as others have also advised find some dealers you trust, you wont get so many bargains as you might see on eBay, but you wont get stung either. Read as much as you can, then read some more, knowledge is important in this hobby, but my top recommendation is to find and join a local club, you will find plenty of experienced collectors to help steer you in the right direction and some will become friends not just fellow collectors. They are not so much rare but unique, there will not be another coin with "exactly" the same scratches and digs and edge knocks or have been run over by the same truck.

great read, as a relative newbie may I ask a stupid question. What is the difference between silver plate and silver wash, is it just the thickness of the silver, or is it a different technique?

It's the coins that are important not the packaging, a concept the RM seem to have missed. You have a "consistent" collection, just enjoy it, you haven't necessarily reduced the value, but even if you have, it only really has a value when you sell, so if you keep them no harm done.

How you display your coins is up to you. I keep some of mine in their packaging and "liberate" others. No point in crying over spilled milk coins.

I'd worry about MDF leaching hydrocarbons and toning the coins, especially if it is new. That said, we all like toned coins, so I guess it depends what the results look like. I guess it is a try it and see. I know "not much help", sorry.

If you are happy to get them from circulation, go to the bank and withdraw £60 or so and ask for it in £1 coins. If they aren't in there, bank it the next day and withdraw the same £60 next week. A little perseverance should pay off and you get your set for the grand sum of £4. Ian..

These so called coins are a pure money making scheme by the mint. Their original claim that these coins are "Legal Tender" but then claiming they meant the VERY limited legal definition of them being able to be used to settle debt in a court, was so misleading I wonder what would happen if someone took them to Trading Standards or the Advertising Standards Authority? There are no clues on the RM website that I can find as to whether it will circulate, I would guess it will as they would have been shouting about only chance to own... but probably will not hit the streets for a couple of years, long after Team GB have had their ass kicked

Popularity will make a difference, but knowing in advance whether the mintage of a commemorative 50p or £2 is going to be in the millions or the hundreds of thousands must help. On recent evidence, the Mint seem to release fewer examples the more popular the subject eg. football & cycling are the most popular sports but the lowest mintages of Olympic 50p.

Hi Adwyn and welcome to the forum. Decimal errors can sometimes go for silly money on eBay, so go for it and see what someone thinks it is worth. The WIII is similar to the Premember Premember so called error on the 2007 Guy Fawkes £2 where the diagonal of the R coincides with the reeding, the horizontal of the "L" is there but very difficult to see with the edge reeding. The missing beads is common on this coin as their diameter is so close to the join between the two metals, you can sometimes see then on the outer ring. Good luck with your sale. Ian..
