  1. Hi, this coins belongs to a friend. He is worried about the source of the coin... I have compared to mine and I notice some differences on the "*" before "One Florin" and the axis of the coin is not 100% aligned. Whats your opinion? Thanks in advance.

  4. Hi everyone, This coin came in a mix with roman (!!!) coins, I was trying to id it and got a bit confused with Spink's obverse and reverse types. As far as I can see it does not have L C WYON in either side. Would this be an obv 5 and rev G. My area of interested in Portuguese hammered coins, so I am a bit at lost... thanks in advance. PA
  5. Hi everyone, A bit off-topic but, I think, still relevant. Together with a friend, we are conducting a study on the Portuguese coin Chinfrão (D. Afonso V 1438-1481). These coins often appear in the United Kingdom and B. J. Cook even argues that they might have had legal tender in England "Chinfraos seem to have had a not insignificant currency in early Tudor England, as a number of finds attest. (...) Perhaps Alfonso V's chinfraos had, in some unrecorded way, been given a legal or tolerated status." in B.J. Cook "Recent Tudor Hoards" I am coming to you to ask for any bibliographic references, findings or any other material related to the Chinfrão. Thanks in advance. PA
  6. I am completely at lost with this one. Any help is welcome!! 14mm and 0.93g Thanks in advance

  9. Hi guys, I am doing a bit of research on Portuguese Medieval Mint Marks and, as part of this little project, I am looking mint marks in other countries: When were they used? Why were they used? Meanings, etc etc etc... I would be extremely grateful if you could, please, send me some references, links, etc... that you think might be useful. Thanks in advance!

    Penny Edward

Thanks everyone. My area is Portuguese hammered coins so this is a bit out of my field. Rather than asking the seller for more details I will buy the coin. Will post more info when I get it. PS: in fact is 7 quid (10 euros) even better.
  14. HI everyone, I buying a lot of Portuguese coins and the seller is trying to include this Sovereign. How would you grade it and how scarce is it? Thanks in advance. PA
  15. The seller, which is a very honest man and so far all the coins I have bought him are better than he described, says than the coin is clearly EF, only the high details show some wear.
  16. Thanks a million. That's the only picture I've. the seller is asking for 750 and it is a bit steep for me. Thanks

    Florin 1849

Weight: 10.8g My friend's worries about the coin are also my worries. The coin looks very good, but it came from China for less than a quarter of the price when compared with mine (also considerably cheap when compared to Spink's price). So either you can buy good coins in China or the fakes are getting really good...
  21. I got this as a gift from a seller. any idea? 13mm Thanks in advance. PA
  22. Hi there, I am new member. I lived in the UK for 6 years but now I am living in Portugal. I collect mostly Portuguese coins, but I have a "thing" for victorian coins. I need you help checking this new addition to my collection. Is it a 1853 or a 1853 over 1852? There seems to be some traces of work done around the date and the 3 looks a bit funny to me. Click to open Opinions? Thanks in advance. PA
