I often look out for rarer coins with holes directly from dealers. I got a 1927 proof threepence for £10 a few years back and a silver 1804 dollar for £40. They seem to go for more on eBay.

Hi everyone Can anyone explain what the difference is between a Maundy silver threepence and one that was intended for standard circulation? In particular, I want to purchase a 1927 silver threepence. I don't know how to identify a proof from a Maundy issue or how much they are worth. Thanks

Hello I have a 1847 Gothic Crown. It's in a bad way. The obverse has been polished to within a inch of its life and its an ex-mount. I'm fairly certain it is an Undecimo variety, I think I can just make out a trace of the edge lettering. I believe the edge lettering has been erased due to the mount. However, I've only just realised that the die axis is aligned, not inverted. Do all Undecimos have inverted die axis? Sorry, tried and failed to take a decent picture of the edge.

Is there a smaller head variety of the 1992 20p or did I just dream that? If so, does anyone know where I can get one? Thanks

Yes, an index would not add much more value, silly idea.

It is a great book. Just one minor negative; it took a while for me to quickly find the reverse I wanted to look for. The reverses are sorted by design rather than chronologically or by denomination. I agree its the best way to concisely include all the coins but an index would have been useful for me.

I'm a little surprised by the that worn 1927 florin going for over £80 but not too much. You have to take into consideration that the mintage is low and most of the coins were not circulated. On top of this, as Peckris said, there are no standard florins/threepences dated 1927. Therefore, it is quite rare to find these in low grade. I guess its a similar with the wreath crowns and even the 1970 proofs. Its something I do not think that Spink or coin dealers have picked up on. I bought a 1927 threepence for £10 last year from a well known dealer at the Wakefield coin fair. The only problem was it had two holes in it! However, I bet if I put in on Ebay, it would sell for at least double what I paid.

Looks like 1673 as there is no clear sign of a 2 for 3/2. V QVINTO wouldn't apply to 1675/3 because the regnal year was V.SEPTIMO Thanks - I paid just £30 so no harm done.

Hi I bought this crown today. It was labelled as 1675 but I'm not 100%. The regnal year on the edge is "Vicesimo Qvinto". So, is it 1675/3 or 1673 or just unidentifiable? Thanks for your help.

Not a fake - a replica, and unsurprisingly poor, at that. Well, the poor replica went for £63. Clever description by the seller, no comment on the bidders.

Hi Everyone As a young child in the early 1980s, I vaguely remember seeing a George V shilling in my piggy bank. I was wondering if anyone knows when coin types fell out of circulation. Here are my complete guesses on florins: Gothic Florin - 1950s Edward VII & Victoria Florins - 1960s George V Florin - 1970s 50% Silver George VI Florins - Mid 1980s I guess there are three main resaons for falling out of circulation: 1. The coin's metal value or collector's value is more than its currency value 2. The coin is no longer legal tender 3. The coins become so worn they are no longer identitiable Any more? If anyone has done any research on this, I'd be very interested.

Thanks everyone. I’m a date run collector. I’ve set up plastic wallet albums with a slot for all the dates for every main issue milled coin. At the moment there are a lot of gaps! It will be a lifetime ambition to complete it but I’m not too bothered about the grade as long as I have a decent one of each type. When setting up the album I decided against setting up gaps for the rare proofs such as gothic crowns, gold coins or Maundy coins because I do not expect to win the lottery. I wasn’t sure whether to set up a space for the 1927 three pence but I have now. That space screams at me every time I open the album. I wanted to make sure that I got the correct one if/when I do buy. So it looks like I need to spend £100 on “a small piece of metal†as my wife would put it. Am I right in saying all George III and IV threepences are Maundy?

With the added condition that you could never sell on it would have to be a high grade victoria gothic crown. Its probably a common choice but I think the coin is stunning.

It should be fairly straight forward. here are two ways I can think of: 1) In Access select File>Get External Data>Import Then find your spreasheet from the directory ensuring you select files of type includes Excel files. Then follow the import wizard instructions. 2) an easier way might be just to open a new table in data sheet view, copy the Excel worksheet contents and and then select all in your access table and paste. You will have to set the headings/formats up again though.

Hello everyone. Another new collector here. I started collecting about 6 months ago after being given a couple of George IV crowns. I'm in interested in collecting pre decimal British milled coins Charles II onwards. So far, I've been buying on Ebay. At the moment I'm not spending that much, the highest value coin I've bought so far is £40. Is Ebay the best place to buy at this price range? What are the alternatives? Also, I have a 1935 crown (common I know). However, it has a much darker tone to the one's I see on Ebay. I do not think its a proof because it has an incuse edge. How did it get this dark tone? It actually looks identical to that one that will not sell at £4,500 - formally owned by Duke of Windsor. Thanks

I agree, I also have the Edward VII 1902 crown with less toning and I think it looks a little bland in comparison.
