Its better around the Perthshire area, Pitlochry, Tummel Valley (my brother has a static caravan there)Kenmore where i went camping as a kid and remember going for a swim in the River at 6am, it was so calm and great weather we loved it as kids, getting a little commercial now, but still have fond memories of Kenmore and i go back whenever i use my brothers van as it's only about 10-15 miles from Tummel along the wwinding roads. Then there's Blair Atholl, my great uncle worked there and the Duke of Atholl is the only other person in the UK with his own private army other than the Queen Yep, I saw that on the Antiques Roadshow last Sunday. Don't know if you or anybody else has been watching the superb "Great Railway Journeys" series 2, with Michael Portillo, but he's covering parts of Scotland in the last week of the series, as follows:-

    Sideline collection ~ £2 coins

I was re-reading through this thread and remembered that you had said that 1949. I don't know if you collect Commemorative 50p Coins as well as Commemorative £2 Coins, or if you have managed to obtain one since you posted your reply, but I have a spare 1992 'Single Market' 50p Coin if it is of any use to you? Thanks for the offer, Rob, which I very much appreciate. But I'm not a 50p man. Looks as though Scott is interested though

    CGS Grading

I think what they mean, Dave, is "finest known by them" That leaves room for something finer, hence the 90.

I'm sure it's not, but I don't like it all the same. are you thinking the same as me??? something definitely doesn't ring true. i have seen chinese copies being offered for sale on american ebay....... Oh, I'm sure we're thinking along exactly the same lines, cartwheel.

Collecting decimal coins given in my change

It's odd really as I have managed to obtain coins from around 10 years ago which are practically UNC, but then I have also seen coins that are a year or two old that look as if they were minted in the 1940's lol I do not always collect or keep all of the coins that I obtain from my change, only usually the very best examples, but as I receive a BU set each year as a Christmas Present, I have no real need for them. I just find it a fun thing to do. Your experience is exactly the same as mine, Rob. Not only UNC ones from 10 years ago, but maybe a 2p from the early 90's still with lustre etc. But as you also say, the odd much more recent coin with what looks like amazing wear. I think I may have mentioned in another thread a 2008 £1 coin (new design) which looked literally as though it had got 40+ years of wear. It wasn't a fake, I'm sure of that, but it was like looking through some sort of time warp, as though it were 2050 or such. It even passed through my mind that it might have been artifically worn down (deliberately) for some reason.

    5p piece from 2008.

Although this isn't my area of interest or expertise, I must say I have found this a fascinating thread to read through. Thanks for all the technical and other info, chaps.

    Sideline collection ~ £2 coins

A Coin Shop that I used to visit until it recently closed used to do a similar thing David. The owner used to pull out a bag of £2 Coins and asked if there were any that I needed and if there were, I was given them in my change. I thought that it was actually quite a good idea. lol It's a neat move which makes the thought of a visit to the shop a bit more tempting, and it's also a welcoming gesture.

It does appear a lovely penny, but closer inspection shows it's not the strongest strike - the folds across Britannia's lap, and Victoria's hair especially below the wreath. Weak strike, but very attractive, nonetheless. Probably worth it.

A 1932 florin in high grade ~ now there's something to aim for. Absolutely. I'm not sure what happened to that florin. I thought I'd kept it, but I can't find it now, 20 years on. Boring ? I love the £2.00 coin !!! (in fact I ought to start an appreciation society)

    Sideline collection ~ £2 coins

I remember near the end, around 1991 or so I was sent to the shop with a George V Florin to purchase a bottle of milk (despite my protests that I didn't actually want to spend this), my mother won the argument and it was spent. It was receiving a GEF 1951 florin in my change in August 1990, that sparked my interest in coins.
  15. 1949threepence

    Which is the better coin?

Gotta be honest Declan, and say that I would purchase his. Aesthetically yours is the more attractive looking, but as you say, the strike is horrendously weak, and it makes a mockery of Britanna's face. Conversely there is considerably more detail on his.

I'm not sure quite what's going on there to warrant such high bidding, but it looks an absurd amount to pay for a beaded border 1860. You could probably get an 1869 in the same state for a similar amount. The fact that it has come down in price, and there are very high bids long before the end of the auction, suggests something is amiss. Just scroll down a short distance to find this superb toothed 1860 for £220 or best offer.

The rich choccie eclair please 1949 You'll need that coat : 'twas -14ºC in these yerr parts yesterday evening It's yours, Peck & yes, we are on course for the coldest December since 1890. Currently -0.58C average. Previously in the modern era, 1981 was the next coldest at +0.3C. Allegedly, December 1890 had an average of -0.8C.

He's certainly had one dissatisfied German buyer, who'd obviously bought a coin described as UNC but less so in hand However, he says he's UK based ~ Greater Manchester. The "Adolf" comment may or may not mean he's German, but it's certainly very unpleasant. Difficult to retaliate without ramping up the problem to the buyer's own detriment. I'd love one of those to be for real. Sincerely hope your gamble has paid off on this occasion, Dave. Realistically, I wouldn't hold my breath, but good luck !!!

    Ebay's Worst Offerings

Maybe, but there's no reason why you can't get an apparently later date struck over an earlier one. The automatic assumption that the die has been reused from an earlier year need not necessarily apply. If the wrong punch has been used when the die was being made you can get any underlying figure, and it doesn't have to be a number either Oh sure, I accept the general principle of an earlier date punched over a later date, but it's just I've never heard of such a coin as the one described, nor is it in any way apparent from the photo.

Actually it had ended by the time I got round to messaging him, but by none of us doing so we are our own worst enemies. If everybody messaged sellers mis-describing their coins, then its incidence, although unlikely to be totally eliminated, would at least dramatically reduce. Yes there are many instances of it on e-bay, but that doesn't make it right. I know it's a bit heavy for something as minor as this, but to quote Edmund Burke; 'All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing'. Q.E.D. He withdrew it, but the other crowns are still for sale, and still described as £5.00 coins (see his other items)

Agreed! but also the whole area beneath the lighthouse is also weak, the appears to be no L in LCW My Freeman 6 is in lousy condition but a much better strike also is it my imagination, or is a there slight difference in the position of Britannia's thumb relative to St Georges cross?? David The thumb does look vaguely different. Although whether it's because all the other fingers are worn to a flat indistinguishable from each other, blur, I don't know.

must have been happy then! Well here's my theory. I reckon that classic british coins is actually shill bidding as he knows people with deep pockets, hence the fact all his auctions are now private, why else would a coin with a value of only 850 be now at double book price, it makes no sense and isn't an ultra rare coin, just my theory anyway Yes Dave, you've confirmed my suspicions about this vendor. I had noticed. disclaimer ~ we may be wrong.
