  1. Interesting, I note there was no sale. Or at any rate, Ian withdrew the coin from sale.

    2014 British Coin Forecast

I have noticed the price for an UNC specimen is, in most cases, much higher relative to the differentials between the rest of the grades, than even 3 years ago. Top quality is definitely even more strongly sought after. But of course, not always possible to get, even if the money is available.

    Very Suspect Grading By Pcgs

It certainly doesn't look MS65 in the photo.

    An Interesting 1898 Penny

looking for more 1898s and 1895s so far found 3 varieties of 1895, the 2mm all appear identical but hard to find spares of the 1mm with intact border beads date differences on the 1mm quite striking, but is there a slight difference in the relationship of the drapery, waves and rocks to the union flag on the shield?? scans done together at roughly the same orientation correction lighting from the opposite direction shows NO difference in the 2 1mm reverses - top image is a 2mm still looking for another wide date(s) Thanks for that, David. Never seen a wide date 1895 before. Of course the difference is only marginal, but clearly discernible to the naked eye.

    1863 Open 3 Revisited

Without delving into the precise mechanics of the issue, David, sympathies for not getting it. Quite a reasonable grade for such a rare item.

    Coin Robbery

Precisely. I've asked Lloyd for a list and shall post it here as soon as I receive it. Will keep a lookout in case any come to light.

    Beginners Help

Welcome Chris. As you say there are a myriad varieties that can be collected, so it's best to concentrate on the area/denomination/time period that interests you most, and stick to it for a good time. That way, you will become much more knowledgable in that particular area, and when you move up to collecting more costly, rarer items, less likely to be fleeced.
  8. Michael, Look on Tony Crocker's facebook page, there is a pic of it there. I can't find mine right now. Thanks Bob. I did have a look at Tony's page, but I couldn't see it. Maybe because I'm not a friend. You are probably right. Here you go Michael....I got these from his page. Thanks for that, Bob ~ apologies for the inconvenience. That's easily the best 1877 narrow date I have ever seen. Mind, only ever seen 2 others, and they were both pretty much washers. That was a nice one. No surprise Tony Crocker has bought it
  9. Michael, Look on Tony Crocker's facebook page, there is a pic of it there. I can't find mine right now. Thanks Bob. I did have a look at Tony's page, but I couldn't see it. Maybe because I'm not a friend.
  10. It will indeed be interesting. In his write up, Ian says he would have been expecting twice the asking price if it hadn't been cleaned.
  11. I completely missed Bob's 1877 narrow date ~ is there a pic of it anywhere ?

How Do I Edit One Of My Posts.

Hmmm, well to me editing under the new system seems no different to editing under the old system. The edit button is obvious enough.

    Decimal Introduction

Same here. I've never once heard of or seen any decimal bronze dated prior to 1971. After this length of time, I'm pretty sure we would have done if they'd existed.

    Coinex!

Probably paying the early bird ticket price would only be worth it between 11 and 12. If you arrived at 2pm, you might as well wait until 2:30 and pay just £5.00. I might go down on Saturday, but I'd go for the £5 ticket.
  16. Peckris is over 100 and he's up to date on Computers True. I was only saying to Alan Turing the other day that IBM really should move out of calculators into the new Sperry-Rand valve machines - can't let ENIAC take all the credit You're great, Peck, you crack me up! You might want to worry about somebody that is talking to Alan Turing... ...even more if he actually understands what Turing says! I visited Bletchley Park last year, and left as utterly ignorant about how Enigma was cracked, as when I entered. There were some frighteningly intelligent people there during the last war, including Turing. His eventual fall from grace and demise were unfair and unfitting for such a great mind.
  17. Allow me to apologise as well Neil. I unfairly pinned possible blame on you, when Colin talked about a very well known coin dealer based in the North. For my own part I can honestly say that all my personal dealings with you have been nigh on perfect. Ironically enough, I've never rung, only e mailed.

    Jane Austin

Bring back John McEnroe, I say! "You cannot be serious. That ball was on the line. Chalk flew up"
  19. Colin Cooke ? They always answer e mails. But I take your point. Leaving the phone off the hook is piss poor customer service. What you describe says in banner headlines, "Your call is unimportant to us"
  20. 1949threepence

    Jane Austin

I'd have put Churchill on the £20, kept Darwin on the £10 and put Austen on the £5. I note "Sir John Houblon" is on the £50. I'm not sure he's well known enough to be on a banknote. Maybe take him off and put another woman on to make up the numbers ? Not sure who. Not Thatcher, hopefully. Maybe a suffragette ? Incidentally, when are they going to update the profile of the Queen. The woman's 87 and still looks about 48 on the banknotes.
  21. A stunning coin, Paulus. Stunning coin with gorgeous toning. Absolute peach.
  22. It is certainly possible to post pictures directly here - go to the Beginners forum and there is a 'pinned' topic at the top explaining how to do it. Pleased to see there's a pinned thread about it, Peck. I remember we discussed the matter and the different ways of posting pics here, a few months back, and I believe we concluded that the best way was indeed, copying and pasting the image link onto the post, direct from whichever image hosting site was being used. By the way, superb 1866 and 1902 sixpences above.

    Blank Avatars

I know - I raised the same thing just after the new forum launched! I was most indignant that it was on my profile but no-one else's Turns out that we can each only see it on our own profile. Apparently we can be warned (by Chris? ) for minor transgressions.. Presumably they are like a yellow card - accumulate too many and you get sent off - which begs the question, why are Dave and I still here? lol !!! ~ this forum is actually very civilized compared to most. I should say! You should see the fixes that some of the canal boat forums get themselves into! This is all positively Jane Austen on here! You'd think canal boat forums would be pretty sedate as well, Stuart. But people will argue about almost anything.
