The most important copper coinage debate
Peter replied to damian1986's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Was this the Swedish copper? What dismayed me is the cu from 1694-1701 of which I have the lot but quite frankly ugly. At least the Anne patterns got better and then we reached the fantastic 1717-24...my favourites. Mr Croker take a bow. -

If they can't manage this they ought to at least send printed catalogues out to clients. -

No farthing collector worth his salt omits an Anne in his collection.

Sensible debate is fine and tend to agree with Peck that 20C Crowns were not intended for circulation. Time to draw a line under this ? -

Another Wear/Weak Strike Question
Peter replied to ozjohn's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
If I'm not happy looking at it others won't.There are ugly MS coins out there but some beautiful VF+...the latter for me. I have just completed my 1895-1970 penny collection @ EF minimum excluding 26 MH the KN & H boys.....those dam nabbit rare freemans mean it will never be 100%.....a grotty N/F open 1903 doesn't float my boat and won't be pursued. I confess to throwing a lot of coins....if they are shite just throw em.....I actually enjoy this....I even threw a 1950 penny recently who only the queen mother would of loved. -
Count me out when its your round. They really haven't a commercial use or need.

Predecimal coins in change - When did you last see...
Peter replied to Sylvester's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
In the late 60's there was plenty of pre 47 silver about although I don't recall pre 20. There was also a lot of Vicky WH and Ed V11 pennies usually worn.Hardly any 1/2d's though. The highlight of beach holiday's were the amusement arcades where I would snaffle anything interesting (armed with my 4 check your change mini books) Post 71 I was more interested in using old 1/2d's in the 2p cash falls and crane grabs...I've always been a bit of a "loose cannon" -

Light strike or Wear?
Peter replied to ozjohn's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
Nice H/C I think you have to look at the reverse for wear indicators.(Lions and beads below the crown) and from the image look nicely struck. Poor old Georges head always gets the bag marks. Maybe a dip in some acetone would enhance? MS grade but enjoy raw. -
The McGowan Collection
Peter replied to cathrine's topic in British Coin Related Discussions & Enquiries
I gave up buying (even at $2 bucks to the £) a James 1 1/-. I really lost the will to live....send it normal post.Aunt Judy's Xmas card arrives every year.....and vice versa. -
I just love the search.....bought a few bad uns.....bit like women although I don't pay....sort of keeps me balanced....whooops.
