    2015 Battle of Britain 50p

Nutsaboutcoins said But they only charge £100 for a £100 coin and it comes with free packaging. BARGAIN! Not much of a bargain as this "legal tender" coin can't be spent! It can't be used in normal purchases!

    Royal Mint again!

A Neat side-step by the Mint What are the legal tender amounts acceptable for the United Kingdom coins? Legal tender has a very narrow and technical meaning in the settlement of debts. It means that a debtor cannot successfully be sued for non-payment if he pays into court in legal tender. It does not mean that any ordinary transaction has to take place in legal tender or only within the amount denominated by the legislation. Both parties to a transaction are free to agree to accept any form of payment whether legal tender or otherwise according to their wishes. In order to comply with the very strict rules governing an actual legal tender transaction it is necessary, for example, to offer the exact amount due because no change can be demanded. Coins are legal tender throughout the United Kingdom for the following amounts: £100 - for any amount £20 - for any amount £5 (Crown) - for any amount £2 - for any amount £1 - for any amount 50p - for any amount not exceeding £10 25p (Crown) - for any amount not exceeding £10 20p - for any amount not exceeding £10 10p - for any amount not exceeding £5 5p - for any amount not exceeding £5 2p - for any amount not exceeding 20p 1p - for any amount not exceeding 20p

Fine, Paulus, but as they fix the definition we've nowhere to go! As for paying fines in crowns, you've got to be fined first!!!

    Identify this?

The lettering in cruciform would suggest Aethelberht(858-66) but I agree it does look like a modern copy. It would take an expert to identify it. Local museum perhaps? We have to be wary as there are many sources of copies, apart from China. The French petrol stations were issuing ancient coin replicas way back and now a new Magazine series called "Rulers of Britain coin collection" will be giving repros away with each issue. Many don't include the WRL stamp to show it's fake!

    Early dated Christian Coin

    Why is it dated 1299?

    Identify this?

Does it have a reverse design? If not it's a button!!!

EU referendum - in or out?

    Seconded (and thirded, fourthed.....)
  8. Rob. Would you let me post a copy of your analysis of the EU question on another forum. It's the most sensible assessment I've read so far.

(It will be the RAF forum where a similar topic is raging!)

    1. Rob

      Rob

Course you can. Unlike some assessments of the EU and its policy, it wasn't intended as a piece of fiction.

      Cheers

      Rob

      Geordie582

Thanks. The RAF topic is raging mainly because of ex-pats who see themselves as threatened in some way, though I can't see the likes of Spain kicking them out any time soon - they provide too much revenue!!

EU referendum - in or out?

We were conned into Europe and now we're being frightened into staying in. Should tell us something? Out, Out, Out.

    Decimal varieties

I desperately want to stop buying modern coins or even collecting them from change - but you know how it is, seeing them brings on the itch and 10-12 coins down the track you can't stop. What a lot of garbage when you oversee the result!!! By the way Chris, I don't dispute other itch-for Kylie, it's just another form of collecting!

Sorry! Didn't notice the garbage after 'Catalogue'.

    Decimal varieties

Yes, Chris . It's referring to the new Spinks 'Decimal' Catalogue Ian Rank-Broadley gue. It only shows the Jody Clark portrait but, as I stated, there is one from Ian Rank-Broadley!
  15. Geordie582

    Decimal varieties

Another anomaly. In Spinks, S4632, the standard 'part shield' is only shown as having the Jody Clark portrait but my example has the Ian Rank-Broadley head. Do you think they published unfinished?

Help with academic study requested - survey for coin collectors

I see it's geared towards Milled. Or am I reading it wrong?

    Nice magnifier.

I've posted this before but In can highly recommend it. http://www.predecimal.com/lindner-digital-microscope-lindner-7155-p-18576.html I think Chris was going to look in to the supplier but that was months ago! I modified the support to provide an adjustable height for various sized coins. Built in picture taking and easy to use.I tried to include a picture but ran into the size restriction. I can send one if you wish. https://www.photobox.co.uk/my/photo?album_id=221590585&photo_id=500005912925

Another reason for avoiding Windows 10 !!!

  20. I've more or less dropped out of collecting because I'm not enough of an expert to spot these. Dealers don't usually have examples that are within my price range, which is why I stuck to the lower end of the condition scale. But it was fun while it lasted, throwing up the odd enigma on the way.

    Peter Nichols cabinets

I paid something similar in 2012. Wonderful workmanship. Full now, but having to use plastic trays now. Quite a let down.
  22. No-one seems to use this. http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/pages/Long-Cross-Pennies/Long%20Cross%20Pennies%20P4.htm#Class 3 sub-classes I can highly recommend it. You can even follow the addendums on each category to extend the classification.
  23. Geordie582
