I guess saying that I am interested in British coins might be a little redundant.

I am rather fond of the "Bullhead" Halfcrown of 1816-7, nothing beats it in my opinion. Although I would have sued had I been George III, I think it is a stunning example of the engravers art!
  2. JMD - It was minted in 1793. Per Dalton & Hamer it was issued by Thomas Spence a London coin dealer.
  3. I agree that the reverse fails to match the impact that the obverse has. BTW - I need to get a better photo of this one, I was in a hurry to get it online. Very nice surfaces when looked at in hand.
  4. D&H Middlesex 833a - Brown Unc. I love this one! The obverse shows a man hanging on a gibbet with a church in the backdrop, a Union Jack is being flown from the church. The inscription reads "END OF PAIN." The reverse shows an open book that reads "THE WRONGS OF MAN" on the left leaf and "JAN.y 21: 1793." on the right leaf. I had to think about this one for a while before I understood the political message that the designer of this token was trying to convey, but I believe this is it: The inscription "END OF PAIN" is a pun on Thomas Paine, who was hated by most Englishmen of the 1790s. The designer is suggesting that the obverse scene would in fact be a welcome end to Thomas Paine. The inscription "THE WRONGS OF MAN" is an obvious jab at Paine's book "The Rights of Man" which was published in 1791. The date on the right leaf of the book 21 January 1793 is the date that King Louis XVI of France was executed. The suggestion here is that Paine's ideas lead to the death of the King of France and would do the same for the King of England if his ideas were to gain a following there.
  5. Do you by chance have a photo of either token?
  6. Lancashire Halfpenny Token D & H-58 1794. EDGE: "PAYABLE.IN.LANCASTER.LIVERPOOL.&.MANCHESTER." This one was manufactured by Matthew Boulton. I like it because it anticipates the Soho copper coinage of 1797.

    Ok, lets get price collecting...

I can work on Shillings if you like Chris.

    Mid 60's, Coincraft wanted Rotographic!

I was told the same thing at the 2004 FUN Show in Florida. Too bad as that was a great catalog. "Good books bad books, you know I've had my share, but when Coincraft left town for another year, Spink didn't seem to care." Sorry Chris!

    Royal Mint News

I really hope a few of you will read up on your British history! At any rate, I am suspect third party grading will be the rule in Europe twenty years from now. I don't know that it will be Sheldon that you will use (and hope not, I think the British system is pretty much fine as it), but I would expect to see more grades for unc. coins in your near future. Too many people have made too much money for it not to happen!

Now what do you think of this idea?

As someone who doesn't eat or pay rent if I don't sell coins, I know where Chris is coming from. He needs to sell coins and books if he is going to be able to continue with this coin gig! If there is anything you can do to sell more books and more coins, do it Chris! You might change the name of this forum and add a sub-forum for questions and comments about the books (perhaps even one for each title you carry), make sure there is plenty of cross linkage between Rotographic and Predecimal.

    Latest ammended pages.

The George III book has potential to be rewritten into something very interesting and useful. I would hate very much to see it fall by the wayside! I see something with a better bio of George III, a general overview of the coinage and specific overviews of each denomination at the start of that section. I'd also like it to have more on Conders and the early 19th Century tokens. If you wish to retain the section on Irish coins you'll be on your own, I know less than nothing about Irish coins! Perhaps in CCGB-2005 you should start the coppers with 1797 and begin the silver with the New Coinage of 1816.

Two more points: 1. Looks like this book is taking in a big part of the reign of George III, for example you have all of the 3d. from 1762, copper from 1797. Why not just go all the way and take in all of the coins from George's reign, it would only be a small step from where you are now. 2. I grant Rotographic the right to use any photographs or other graphics or images that may be of use found on my website (http://www.aethelred.net). If you need anything cropped or altered in any way, or if you need additional photographs, please feel free to ask.

If I may be so bold, what purpose does the list of monarchs serve? I would suspect that anyone smart enough to collect British coins will already know who has ruled the country for the last 200 years and if not that information is readily avaliable elsewhere. Im my opinion that space could be better used with perhaps a list of the operational dates of the various mints.

    Your cover ideas please.

Question Chris, will you be able to do the coin or coins in color?

    Your cover ideas please.

Led Zeppelin never gets old to me Chris, I could listen to 1-4 endlessly and never get sick of them! See if this concept for acover works better:
