Does it not depend on why you are collecting them, and how much you can afford? If its gold bullion then buy the cheapest, if a collector buy the best quality. Keep away from the edge knocked coins if a collector..

Inn the US CGS is not considered a good grader of coins, they want PCGS

Don't buy from China is the rule unless slabbed and well checked with NGC or PCGS, and even then they are faking the slabs and numbers on them.

UPS and FEDEX are dreadful for scamming fees from buyers.

people think coins are boring, which of course they are not.

altered coins are common on eBay.

tarn-X is good for silver but NOT for bronze or copper.

plenty of fakes around and not just from China.

you can buy the slabs empty now and seal them.

so much garbage on eBay nowadays.

So I bought this many years ago and on the packet it has the words "pattern white metal trial piece" with a weight of 10.4grams.Anyone have any ideas what this is? Thanks

From 1996 to 2000 I bought copper and bronze UK pennies and sold them in 2013 at LCA, along with Cromwell Crown, half crown and shilling, 1911 long set, 1937 long set, to raise some cash.. There was a good profit made but I have noticed that category of prices has gone steady or even down, for the pennies, in recent years. So I think I sold at the right time, the proofs have increased in value though. I was only divesting 20% of my savings as you seem to be doing the rest is in income producing stocks and trusts but of course there will be another downturn, no one knows when of course but sure to happen with valuations being what they are. I have bought some 2017 sovereigns, Piedfort, BU plain edge, only due to mintage numbers being so low. I think they are speculation for investors but at least they are gold.

In my opinion unless the grading company says its a VIP on the slab then best to avoid. This dealer is totally convinced its a VIP and I just hope he does not advertise it again as so after he has eventually refunded me so some other person gets sucked in. I saw a 1960 VIP crown a few years ago and its very obvious due to the finish and actual 'frosting' that it wa sa VIP the finish was far superior. I would have really shout a dealer in the UK would have been able to tell one from a normal proof but I was wrong. Thankfully eBay are looking after the refund, also PayPal and then my credit card. Buyer beware is so true.

In fact a 1911 PRMS65 half sovereign just arrived from Drake to go with the sovereign same grade. Have 1923 SA sovereign and half at MS64, 1937 set, looking for 1887 proof next kinda expensive though so will save up and get.

The image on eBay is nothing like the coin sent but the grading numbers match so I assume the dealer has enhanced the lighting conditions to make it look as if there is frosting as he advised. very strange a dealer from the UK should do this, especially to a coin collector and my feedback clearly shows I do collect and have done so on eBay since 2000. he is not responding to emails either now so I opened a case with eBay, phoned them and they said I am covered even if he refuses to pick it up and I will get a refund. Whats the point of the dealer doing this, it certainly is not going to enhance his reputation or lead to more business?
