Heartening to see the community support around the defaced Rashford mural - and there was a piece on local TV today about primary schoolkids writing letters of support to the 3 who were abused.

Was dreadful - sickening actually. They lost as a team. Pointing the finger at different players in such a situation is not only spiteful (and racist in this case), but also extremely stupid. If anyone was to blame it was Southgate for making tactical errors in the final. Rashford should have been brought on for Kane or Sterling in the second half. Then, had he been needed in a shoot out, he'd have at least been warmed up. As it was the penalty was the only action he'd seen for the entire tournament. Even then, he only just missed. A fraction to the right and it would have gone in, as Donnarumma had gone the wrong way. The racism even more moronic because without Sterling, I doubt we'd have progressed beyond the group stage.

Some absolutely disgusting racism against the three who missed penalties. It wasn't their colour to blame - it was their youth. I personally wouldn't have replaced Henderson with Saka, but ain't hindsight a wonderful thing?

Yes i agree as i mentioned its often hard to tell from a picture ,although you have years of experience and knowledge ,its beginners that are mostly buying them. Pictures is what most of us buy from and new collectors when they receive the coin are not sure what to look for even when they have the coin in hand. Without a second opinion they will then as a forum member messaged me last night / this morning told me just put them away ( as he did ) and only find out when they come to sell them or show them in hand to someone else. Its hard to be sure at first ,although a step in the right direction ,if new collectors have some guide lines to follow. I know or have read on here (BIll pugsley CGS ) people being really dissapointed when they come to sell some that they are not perhaps as good or worth as much as they thought. Plenty people have sent them to a TPG only to find out months after buying them the coin was cleaned / re toned and i dont know anyone personally who did not agree when the pointers were explained to them. Some may not agree and say the TPG does not know what they are doing ,although i feel thats more in disappointment they have been shown something and thought they knew better. I have not got any other pictures of cleaned / re toned coins as i have either returned them ,thrown or given them away ,sometimes to forum members. ............................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................ https://www.londoncoins.co.uk/?page=Pastresults&searchterm=Cleaned+Penny&searchtype=1 A sample of ones that LCA have listed as cleaned that i mailed to a forum member which helped him and hat off to LCA and recently DNW for making people aware before bidding.

I found this while making brekkie this morning. If 'That's Life' was still on telly I'd probably be considering sending it to Esther Rantzen....

Lot 1176, from March this year - the 1918H "once cleaned, now retoned". Looks absolutely awful.

A useful resource - perhaps that link should be put into a separate post and pinned as a Stickie? It does seem though - from the pictures on the LCA page - that most of those coins look clearly cleaned, especially after a moment or two of inspection.

Yeah - you don't want coal dust all over your coins

Every member of the team a credit to their families, their communities, their country. Let's just hope the morons who wrecked Leicester Square earlier today don't go on a booze fuelled rampage tonight. European till I die.

Rather lose to the Italians than the Germans or French.

The 1888 and 1909 look very obviously heavily cleaned to me. It is not just the colour, but also the evidence of quite a bit of wear, which is at odds with the apparent lustre. I see quite a few like this, where some amateur has been at them with lemon juice or similar. I would be less certain of the 1854 - the wear and residual lustre look much more in keeping.

I thought the same. They've probably had one or two shouts of "cleaned" by winners trying to get some cashback. So now, where there's the slightest doubt, they're employing the term as a caveat.

One i bought NOT attributed off a dealers website ,he is a good friend ,so did tell him what it was but happy to sell it me 👍 They are easier to spot with the other indicators ,die crack to the left of DEI and a wider I in Gratia. Dont see many in a decent grade 1848 /6.

I would echo the above sentiments about buying a book before anything else. If you're going to sell as well I'd be checking my change for anything worth selling as it seems like some of the low mintage commemoratives can got for a bit over face value. I use a spreadsheet to track my coins - it's not perfect but it does the job.

You might and I say just might find coins to sell on local car bootsales (Good luck finding anything decent) or a better way might be local antique and collectors fairs and even summer markets if antiques change hands . Fully agree that books should be your first choice for any spare cash

Welcome Artisan, from yet another South Westerner! My first bit of advice is very simple. As a newcomer to collecting, don't even THINK of becoming a dealer until you have a solid foundation of knowledge in, and experience of, coins in general. I'm sure the dealers on this forum would agree? That doesn't of course prevent you from putting any spares you may have from your collection, up on eBay and you would get help doing that in this forum. Your area of interest - Roman to Victorian - is very wide, and there are many books you could invest in. The first one would be Spinks Standard Catalogue which is published annually. However, coin prices don't change dramatically these days so don't get the latest edition (rather expensive), but pick up a copy from eBay that's 2 or 3 years old and won't cost nearly so much. You can get help from members here about the coins you want to identify, but pictures are a MUST! If you need more room than the attachment maximum for each post allows, then just make more posts. Sadly there are no big coin fairs down here, which would be your best way to see and learn about the coins you're interested in, so treat this forum as your resource and we will help where we can. Good luck.

As far as coin dealing goes I would surgest don't bother , its nice someone young has an interest but I would strongly surgest its not a good way or an easy way to make a living you will need a lot of luck and working for someone else might be a better idea

Welcome! The best bits of advice I was given when I started were: Buy the book before the coin. Read, read, read if you are serious about collecting. Buy the best grade you can afford of a particular coin. Finally if you buy coins graded by third parties (slabbed coins from LCGS, PCGS, NGC, ANACS to name the mains ones) buy the coin not the slab. That is to say dont let the grade on the plastic deterkine if you feel its a nice coin. Good luck and I hope you enjoy this great hobby!

Welcome to the forum Greg! You ask a lot of questions that needs long answers, and I am sure others will chip in with their thoughts. Just to let you know, I also live in Devon, so if you would like to meet up, we can discuss and I can pass on my thoughts. (I have been collecting and dealing for 20 years+.) I am in Barnstaple Pannier market most Wednesdays, if you are in North Devon?
